SNAPPS WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT TEMPLATE
What is the self-directed learning issue that was identified in your oral presentation?
I was struggling between bacterial sinusitis symptoms and Viral upper respiratory tract infection. I did
more research using my clinical guidelines handbooks now I am able to formulate a diagnosis between
them and determinate the treatment plan. I also learn which antibiotic is best to use and what to teach
my patient for better outcome.
Research the self-directed learning issue and provide a summary of your findings which is fully supported
by appropriate, scholarly, EBM references.
The symptoms from bacterial sinusitis and Viral upper respiratory tract infection are not too far apart
which make it really challenging. As Nurse Practitioner asking the right questions while conducting
your assessment (objective and Subjective) will help conclude the appropriate diagnosis.
Miller and Rose (2015) have found that the common cold, influenza (flu), and sinusitis are common
upper respiratory tract infections (URIs) that frequently result in unnecessary missed school days
among children, primary care office visits, and missed work days among adults. These illnesses are
self-limiting because of their viral etiology (except in less common cases of bacterial sinusitis).
Bacterial sinusitis
Patients with sinusitis may be feeling pain or pressure in their forehead, cheeks, or around their eyes.
They may also have thick, cloudy mucus coming from their nose, a stuffy nose, or aching teeth. They
may also feel some fever. Furthermore, patients with sinusitis may often report having a cold and feel
better later; then they again start feeling sick. This is known as double sickening (Acute Sinusitis,
2016).
Nonpharmacologic management
According to Hollier (2018), patients may:
_ Need to use a humidified air to improve mucus clearance
_ Need to avoid environmental irritants.
_ Need to sleep with head of bed elevated to aid with the drainage.
Acute Sinusitis (2016), patients may:
_ Avoid a nasal spray with a decongestant in it for more than 3 days. If they do, the swelling in your
sinuses may worsen when they stop using it.
_Increase fluids intake such as water or Gatorade to loosen the mucus; rest plenty.
_ Hold a wet and warm towel over their face or breathing in steam by using moist heat to loosen
mucus.
