1 College 1 – Ch 1 & Hofstede’s cultural dimensions

1.1 Hofstede’s five cultural dimensions
- Power distance (machts-afstand)
 The extent to which the less powerful members of institutions and organizations
within a country expect and accept that power is distributed unequally(ongelijk).
Inequality = more versus less
- Uncertainty avoidance (onzekerheidsvermijding)
 The extent which members of a society feel threatened by uncertain or unknown
situations. The future is uncertain.
- Masculinity (mannelijkheid)
 The tendency within a society to emphasize traditional gender roles.
- Long term orientation (lange termijn orientatie)
 a basic orientation towards time that values patience.
- Individualism (individualisme)
 the tendency of people to look after themselves and their immediate family and
neglect the needs of society .

1.2 Chapter 1
Cultural competence
Before you can begin to understand other cultures, you will have to start by understanding
your own culture  know thyself.
1. Learn what your own culture assumptions and values are.
2. Accept the reality of your own cultural conditioning
3. Accept the reality of the cultural conditioning of others

When you recognize what makes your own culture unique, it will make adjusting to a different
culture a lot easier.

Stereotyping:
- Intra-cultural communication: communication that take place between members of
the same dominant culture. (gender-related, elderly or disabled people)
- Intercultural communication: communications that takes place between members of
two distinct cultures. (Dutch people, Germans, Belgians). Often negatively.

To prevent stereotyping it is important to see people as an individual rather than put a label on
them.
