Developing a specific research question opens the door to search for the best evidence based
information available for decision making. According to Health Science Library,” Evidence based practice
is the integration of clinical expertise, patient values and the best evidence in order to consistently
improve the quality of patient care outcomes.”(Wright, 2018).

The use of the PICOT framework for questions development improves research results on the issues or
concerns being addressed. A PICOT question is developed with five components, the population, the
intervention, a comparison, an outcome and a time frame. The population addressed what the issue is
and who is affected by the issue. The intervention is the practice used to resolve the issue. The
comparison is an alternative solution. The time frame is the duration of intervention. (Wright, 2018).

The area of interest I focused on in week one was the relationship between Computed Tomography (CT
scan) radiation exposure and cancer in children and young adults. A PICOT question for my area of
interest would be: In children and young adults, is the exposure of computed tomography radiation
increases the chance of cancer in comparison to non-exposed children during their lifetime span? With
this question, I identified the population as children and young adults and the outcome by comparing
the exposed population with the non-exposed population. I selected the time frame of a child life time
because the outcome of cancer is a lifetime process that a patient must life with. The outcome is
