Article Title: Are the studies on cancer risk from CT scans biased by indication? Elements
of answer from a large-scale cohort study in France
https://www.nature.com/articles/bjc2014526#citeas
Purpose
To answer this week’s assignment, I chose the above listed research study. The purpose of this
study assignment is to further research the topics related to my PICOT interest question and
critique the selected article by determining the strengths, limitations, and potential application.
My PICOT question is: In children and young adults, is the use of reduced dose of radiation
exposure of computed tomography (CT) decrease the changes of cancer in comparison to higher
dose during their lifetime? Upon reviewing the article, the researchers used a quantitative study
design to analyze how one variable affects others over a period of time. The aim of this
quantitative study was to determine if the increase exposure of computed tomography (CT) scan
during childhood or adolescence did indeed cause cancer and examine how cancer predisposing
factors affect the assessment of radiation related risk.
Research Design
The research designed used in this study was a quantitative research. As per the weekly reading,
a quantitative research method focuses on gathering numerical data and explaining relationships
between variables within a population. This particular quantitative study design does have the
large size sample population and it is examining the relationship of CT exposure to cancer.
Discussion of sample
The target population for this study was nonprobability sample; this means the population met
the necessary criteria for participation. As states in the article, the study included 67,274 children
born after January 1 st 1995 with previous first scans before the age 10 from year 2000 to 2010
with no cancer diagnosis detected during first scan. The nonprobability sampling is specific and
confined to a certain population. The advantages of selecting the non-probability sampling are
that this method is quick, inexpensive, and convenient. ( Elfill, Negida, 2017). The one
disadvantage of the non-probability sampling is that this method is commonly criticized because
of the chance of bias and the sampling is not guaranteed to adequately represent the population in
certain cases. ( Elfill, Negida, 2017).
