• In what ways could an understanding of systems theory and complexity scienceimpact
the role of the NP?
• Take a few minutes to reflect on the NP practice model that is most predominantin
advanced practice environments you have observed. Are you satisfied with the demonstrated
level of interprofessional collaboration?
• Briefly consider what appears to be the driving practice model for advanced practice
nursing in your state. If your state lags behind in its practice model language, what might you
do to facilitate change?
Our week 5 lesson states that the systems theory of healthcare views organizations as dynamic,
complex sets of intertwined elements, continuously interacting with the environment in which
they operate. Our week 5 lesson also discusses complexity science, which is synonym with
flexibility and chaos that are common in complex, adaptive systems. The role of the NP is
affected by both the systems theory and complexity science in more ways than one. Take the
ED for example. The NP has to approach patient-centered care from an interdisciplinary
approach. The NP has to take in to account the diagnostics and tests required, knowing that
this patient’s STAT CT will be bumped to accommodate a stroke alert, or that this patient’s
life-threateningarrhythmia will take precedent over that patient’s acute pain. In essence,
understanding systems theory and complexity science will help the NP make critical decisions
impacting patient care, by being able to multi-task, prioritize, and roll with thepunches.
The NP practice model that I see the most seems to be that of collaborative practice. In Florida,
the NP must have protocols in place with a supervising physician in order topractice. What I
have noticed is that the elderly in our community do not seem to be as accepting of NPs as the
younger generations. When assessing an elderly ED patient with an NP, more than once the
patient has asked about when the doctor is coming in. The NP educated the patient on his role,
but the patient still felt hesitant about being taken care of by an NP and not an MD. As a future
NP, I feel education ofour community will help our patients understand our roles, our
capabilities, and our qualifications. The healthcare organizations and insurance companies
could host regular patient fairs where information is facilitated to patients about the benefits of
