,The desks are arranged in rows where two children sit per desk. There are roughly 10 tables in the
classroom with space for 2 single desks where students can choose to sit on their own. There is one
teacher cupboard with more cupboard space above the sink in the back of the classroom. There is a
large TV screen which is used to show PowerPoint presentations. There is also a whiteboard for
writing of instructions. There are poster pertaining to Afrikaans all over the walls. The walls are
painted white and blue.
The classroom is arranged so that two students sit next to each other. This makes grouping flexible
as desks can easily be moved. Group work has not been encouraged during this time due to Covid.
I feel that the classroom is conducive to learning as the atmosphere is warm and inviting. The
classroom has lovely natural light and air which makes it fresh and airy. The classrooms are well
spaced in the school which means there is not much of a distraction from other classrooms. The
mood is a happy one.
Discipline is well managed. There is a code of conduct visible in the classroom to which the teacher
refers to often. The students seem well aware of what is written in the code and what the
consequences of breaking the code will be. The learners are well behaved, however can be loud at
times, which I feel is quite normal. The teacher speaks to the students with kindness and respect and
receives the same in return. When asking her about this she explained that it is important to set
these boundaries from the very start and to be consistent with the students.
There are one or two students who are disruptive in the classroom, this can interrupt lessons when
the teacher has to intervene. The bathroom is also situated right next to the classroom, and this can
sometimes cause distractions.
The lessons are 40 minutes each, this rarely changes. The start and finish of the periods are timeous,
and students are on time for their lessons. There are no bells to indicate this. Time management is a
huge focus within the school and students are encouraged to organise themselves. The day is
structured with three periods, a half hour snack, two periods, a 55-minute lunch and then the final
two periods.
, The relationship between the learners themselves seems to be friendly, I did not witness any
incidences. The school does have a huge focus on respect, and this is clearly enforced among the
learners. The same can be said for the teachers, they treat each child with respect and equally.
