Unit M6165085 – The principles of infection prevention and control

Understand own and others roles and responsibilities in the prevention and control of
infections

1.1 Explain employees’ roles and responsibilities in relation to the prevention and
control of infection

It is our responsibility, as employees, to take precautionary measures to prevent and control
the spread of infection in the hospital, including working safely to protect ourself, our
colleagues, visitors and other individuals from infections.

We also must ensure we attend all the mandatory trainings that the Weston Area Health Trust
(WAHT) – as our employer - provide us in relation to infection prevention and control,
furthermore we must follow national and local (hospital’s) policies, procedures and
guidelines.
We must take standard precautions (such as wearing appropriate PPE), and we also report any
breaches of the relevant policies to the nurse in charge or our manager as soon as possible to
prevent the occurence of any possible infections, or stop/reduce to spread of it.
All members of staff have a duty to make themselves aware of these requirements and how
those affects them, such as hand hygiene is the most important measure for preventing
infection.
As employees, we are required to have an awareness of risk management, and we must be
aware of our responsibilities to:

 identify and reports any risks
 act upon identified risk which is relevant to our role
 take appropriate actions to minimise the risk

For example, it is very important that all equipment is cleaned correctly to avoid cross
infection as it can spread from one person to another through linen, instruments and
equipment.

1.2 Explain employers’ responsibilities in relation to the prevention and control infection

WAHT – as our employer - has to provide a safe work environment for all staff (such as
suitable areas for washing, toileting and disposing of waste) and also provide the required
PPE (free of charge and in different sizes), and other equipment there, as well as maintain
them.
It is also responsible for providing relevant information and training for all members of staff.
The Trust needs to ensure that staff attend the ’Infection prevention and control’ training
before commencing their job in the hospital, and they update it in every two years or earlier if
they need.
