Stap 1: Vorming van de sokkel = voetstuk
❖ De sokkel ontstond al meer dan 1,5 miljard jaar geleden in het Pre Cambrium (tijdperk).
❖ Op de plaats van het huidige Colorado Plateau ontstond een afgeplat, vlak gebied met op de
randen resten van gebergten.
Stap 2: Afzettingen
→ transgressie en regressie
❖ In de loop van de daaropvolgende tijdperken Paleozoïcum en
Mesozoïcium werd het gebied bij herhaling overspoeld
door de zee.
❖ Daarbij werd op de sokkel sedimentgesteenten afgezet
→ klimaatwijzigingen
❖ ook voor de ijstijden van het kwartair, stijgt en daalt de zeespiegel in deze regio ten gevolge
van de klimaatwijzigingen
❖ zeer koude periodes
➢ breidt de ijskap zich sterk uit, er wordt veel minder water door de rivieren naar de zee
vervoerd
❖ zeer warme periodes
➢ smeltende ijskap af, de massa smeltwater komt in de rivieren
