‘n Naamlose man soek tussen kasette totdat hy sy
gunsteling met ‘n blou plakkertjie op vind. Hy sit dit in
die kassetspeler met ‘n glimlag.
Die kasset wys ‘n rustige toneel van ‘n gesin om ‘n
swembad. Die meisie sit met ‘n opblaaseendjie en die
seuntjie speel met honde. Die pa braai met ‘n bier in die
hand. Hy het donker krulhare nes die seuntjie en hy is
lank en fris. Die ma is die een wat die toneel afneem. Sy
dra pienk plakkies met geel blommetjies.
Prologue
A nameless man searches between videocassettes until he finds his favourite one with a blue
sticker on. He inserts it in the cassette player with a smile.
The cassette shows a peaceful scene of a family around a swimming pool. The girl sits with a
rubber ducky and the boy plays with dogs. The dad is braaing with a beer in hand. He has dark
curly hair like the young boy and he is tall and lean. The mom is the one taking the video. She is
wearing pink slops with yellow flowers on them.

Hoofstuk 1 - Geel en Gelukkig
Lien hoor haar ma se wyn ritueel in die kombuis: die
yskas wat oop gaan, wyn wat geskink word, die vrieskas
oop, en ys in die wynglas. Braam sit die televisie harder
om die klanke uit te kanselleer. Chistien bied ‘n aandete
van roereier, verbrande roosterbrood, en ‘n halwe blikkie
bone aan. Die yskas is amper leeg, maar die wyndoos
oorheers dit. Andersins is daar net ‘n bietjie kaas, ‘n
sakkie melk, Tupperware houers met iets in, en drie
tamaties daarin.
Christien luister na ‘n vioolkonsert en kyk by die woonstel
se venster uit. Braam is deur sy ma se gegillende bui
geïrreteer en hou aan televisie kyk. Christien gaan slaap
met haar klere aan sonder om te eet. Sy eet baie min.
Lien maak Braam se skoolbroek reg en spreek haar haat vir ‘n onbekende “hom” uit terwyl sy na
Norah Roberts luister.
Chapter 1 - Yellow and Happy
Lien hears her mom’s wine ritual in the kitchen: the fridge opening, wine pouring, the freezer
being opened and ice falling into the glass. Braam turns the television’s sound up to block the
noise out. Christien serves a dinner of scrambled egg, burned toast, and half a can of baked
beans. The fridge is nearly empty, but the wine box dominates it. Besides that, there is only
some cheese, a bag of milk, Tupperware with unknown contents and three tomatoes.

Hoofstuk 2 - Jou Standaard-Skoolnommertjie
Lien sien nie uit na haar werk by tant Malie se koffiewinkel na skool nie. Sy kla by Wouter, haar
enigste vriend, daarooor terwyl hulle die oggend skool toe stap. Sy word R10 per uur betaal plus
fooitjies. Tannie Bets in woonstelk nommer 504 het die werk vir Lien gereel. Albei Lien en
Wouter was al net ‘n jaar by die skool en Lien haat die plek. Sy is ‘n alleenloper.
Wouter het ‘n krieketvergadering en Lien gaan soos
gewoonlik wanneer sy alleen moet wag biblioteek
toe. Daar maak sy ‘n lysie van plekke oorsee wat sy
wil besoek. Bo aan die lys is Japan, en dan Praag.
Lien se gunstelling vak is Engels omdat Meneer
MacMillen vreemd is: hy dra bont dasse en gee nie
om wat ander mense van hom dink nie. Hulle
handel Macbeth. Anders as Engels, verpes Lien
haar vakke.
In lewensoriëntering vra Meneer Bruwer dat die leerders hulle droom beroep op ‘n papiertjie
moet skryf. Hy verdeel hulle dan in groepies om ‘n taak oor hulle gekose beroep te doen. Lien
skryf “prokureur” neer al was dit wat sy jare gelede wou doen. Sy beland in ‘n group met Miemie
Spies wie vael is en bril dra, Sally Swanepoel wie terterig is, en Hein Venter met koers, blonde
hare en wie stil en fris is. Miemie neem leierskap en vra dat Lien aanlyn moet kyk watter
vereistes universiteite benodig.
Chapter 2 - Your Standard School Number
Lien does not look forward to working at aunt Malie’s coffee shop after school. She complains
to Wouter, her only friend, while they walk to school that morning. She will be paid R10 an hour
plus tips. Aunt Bets in flat number 504 organised the job for Lien. Both Lien and Wouter have
been at the school for only a year now. She hates the place. She’s a loner.
Wouter has a cricket meeting and Lien goes to the library as usual when she’s waiting alone.
There she makes a list of all the places overseas she wants to visit. First is Japan, then Prague.
Lien’s favourite subject is English because Mr MacMillan is strange: he wears colourful ties and
does not care what other people think about him. They are analysing Macbeth. Besides English,
Lien hates all her subjects.
