Assignment 1 – Writing Frame ()

---Gateway College Science Laboratory---
Describe the main activities of the college science laboratory:
The main activities of a college science laboratory are to allow students to carry out
investigation and practical and to improve their results. Their results can be shared with
other students and see the differences between their results and the teachers expected
results. This allows the students to gather and obtain the data. This helps them understand
theories and concepts. Another activity of a college science laboratory is the setting up of
practical. This can be done by the laboratory technician and the teacher if it is too
dangerous. If it is not that dangerous it can be done by the student and teacher. Another
activity of the college science laboratory is the maintenance of equipment this has to be
tested properly for the safety of the students and teachers. Another activity is the
laboratory technicians which put label on the substances that have hazards like corrosive,
flammable, toxicity and other health hazardous.

Describe the hazards for the activities in the college science laboratory:
There are substances which are hazardous to health which include corrosive, flammable,
toxic and environmental hazards in a scientific organization. Corrosive is a substance which
causes corrosion. Flammable is something which causes fire easily. Toxic is a substance that
is poisonous. Environmental hazard is a substance which can cause harm to the
environment. These are hazards which can cause damage to the health and safety of the
student and teachers. There are biological substances such as bacteria, viruses, parasites
and fungi which are also hazardous to health. There are agents which causes diseases. The
first one is called carcinogen is an agent which increases the risk of cancer. Another agent is
called teratogen is a substance which constrains the foetus and causes problems. Thirdly
another agent is called mutagen Is an ultraviolet light or a radioactive element that
increases the risk of genetic mutation. Another type of hazard is electrical hazards which
include many types you could be doing circuits in physics and the practical is to build an
electrical circuit there are hazards in this which could cause electrocution. The electrical
hazard can be in the laboratory such as the socket which can cause electrocution. Thirdly
the spills of acid can cause major injuries such as burns to the skin and eye. There are
glasses objects which need to be handled with care or can also be hazards as they can cause
the cut in your skin. In addition to this concentrated solution can cause respiratory
problems, burn eyes and skin. Furthermore, to this the manual handling equipment are a
hazard as this can cause major injuries, they are some glass equipment and if they fall to the
floor they break, and this can be hazardous as teachers and student walk around the class
and if there is glass lying around in the floor it can cause cuts to your foot which means this
is also a hazard. Additionally, students and teachers have health problems such as eczema,
lung problems, and asthma different substances can have different effects and if the

, substances are dangerous and not handled with care or if the student inhale a substance
which is highly concentrated this can have a knock-on effect on the student causing more
complication.
Explain how the exemplar school laboratory health and safety policy reduces risk in the
laboratory:
The exemplar school laboratory health and safety policy which is a starting point to reducing
the risk in the laboratory. What this means is that once a student or teacher has been
injured in the laboratory the exemplar science department health and safety policy can
change their rules depending on the accident and put their control measures in place.

Fume cupboards

the exemplar health and safety policy decrease the risk of a hazard in a laboratory. It states
that “The COSHH Regulations require the regular testing of fume cupboards (maximum
interval 14 months) with a quick check before use”. Testing normally takes place each year
this means that the fume cupboards also go through regular testing the reason why a fume
cupboard is important because it extracts the hazardous substances that the students and
the teacher inhale.

Electrical testing

The exemplar school laboratory health and safety policy reduce the risk of a hazard. This is
shown through the use of electrical equipment that the student and teachers use are tested
which shows that the laboratory is under safe working practices and also reduces the risk in
the laboratory. Furthermore, to this another way the exemplar health and safety policy
reduces the risk in the laboratory is shown through the rules that says” this employer
requires portable electrical equipment to be inspected and tested regularly”. The reason for
this is the safe working practices as a whole reduces the risk of the hazard in the laboratory.

Manual handling

Thirdly another way the college as a whole reduces the risk in the laboratory is having
control measures in place such as rules for the manual handling of equipment. This is shown
through the rules “All regular operations involving lifting or carrying equipment, pushing
trolleys, etc will be assessed to see if it increases the risks of injury”. This states that student
should be in safe working practices which means that the laboratory needs to be tidy so that
the places the student and teacher are working from is safe. In addition to this it says lifting
the equipment need to be assessed which means handled with care and also be in a
cupboard when it is not needed because the college need to ensure the safe working
practices

Emergency procedures

Secondly the most effective way of decreasing the risk in the laboratory is the student and
teacher know about the emergency procedures. This is shown through the rules in the
