“These new ‘COVID-19 variants’ are just media fanfare,” said my

cousin, who is studying to be a health care worker, “I only read scientific

articles now”. To me, this sounded contradictory since the new variants,

such as the British one, have been empirically confirmed and investigated

by prominent scientists and organisations (Iacobucci, 2021; Mahase,

2020). However, it became clear that he mostly did not trust the way the

media portrayed COVID-19 news and thus chose to disengage with news

media as a whole. His wariness is symbolic of the low media trust

amongst citizens in these current times, who see the portrayal of emotion

in news as something inherently negative (such as “overdramatising”

COVID-19 news). However, there is an increasing number of scholarly

research that shows that the use of emotions in news and in public debate

can lead to a positive impact on political engagement, which is why in this

essay I will argue in favour of the statement “The use of emotions in news

media reporting and/or public debate is not part of the problem but rather

part of the solution to engage a citizenry which is increasingly disengaged

and cynical about politics”.

For the sake of clarity of terms used in this essay, I will firstly define

two concepts. The first is “emotion”, which is composed of four

dimensions: affective, cognitive, conative and physiological (Wirth &

Shramm, 2005). In this essay, the affective dimension, which deals with

feelings of arousal, and the cognitive dimension, which deals with mental

processing of emotions and events, will be the main focus. Additionally, it
