THE ROLE OF THE HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE WORKER UNIT 6/HSC025 OR
EDI CU2546

LEARNING OUTCOME 11.1Explain how a working relationship is different from
personal relationship.

A working relationship is one based on the roles and job description of a career,
knowing the limits and boundaries of his or her expected duty of care and it is totally
official and professional whereas personal relationship is one based on friendship, it is
casual and may have less boundaries than working relationship, depending on how
intimate the relationship is.

For example, the concept of team working to support a service user is centred on the
interest of the service user based on agreed working guidelines. It also involves carrying
out my job expectation as stated in my job description and following laid down policies
and procedures in order to meet the service user’s needs. Whereas personal
relationship for example with a friend is based on what is mutually beneficial to both
parties.

A personal relationship is one where one's personal life and extra-curricular activities
and social life are involved, whiles a working relationship is a relationship between
colleagues at the workplace. Colleagues therefore spend time together at work, by
working together, though there is little or no contact outside of work. It's strictly
professional. For instance, working relationship among work colleagues involve
professional relationships, such as working within teams, and also when undertaking
certain works with others towards a common goal with a common purpose.

1.2 Describe different working relationship in health and social care settings

• Employee’s to different Professionals, such as Gp’s, Speech and language
Therapist, Legal advocate of a service user. Colleagues to colleagues

There are different working relationships in health and social care settings; these
include relationship between colleagues, for example colleagues working in harmony
according to their employment contracts in the interest of the service user. It can be
more casual than that between the clients and staff or between manager and staff. The
way colleagues talk to each other is definitely not the way they talk to clients or
manager.

Staff to manager

There is also a relationship between workers and managers in ensuring that the centre
policies are carried out effectively and efficiently. This relationship is official; with the
management using and coordination the resources effectively to ensure that clients’
needs are met. The relationship between manager and staff is based on established
roles, contracts, code of conducts and culture of the organisation in ensuring that its
goals are met.

Staff to client

Another relationship is between different health and social care workers for example
support worker, nurse, professionals, example legal advocate, psychologist, GPs and
service user and their families in providing duty of care to the service user.

2.1 Describe why it is important to adhere to the scope of job roles.

It is very essential to adhere to the agree scope of the job role. This is because an
employee’s job description is normally part of an employee’s contract, therefore the
employees have a legal responsibility to implement and accomplish the define role and
responsibilities of the assigned jobs.
