HealthIT Topic

The topic selected is about how telehealth boom will change healthcare. The topic is from

an article authored by Landi (2020) titled, “Here is how execs from Oscar Health, Intermountain

and Cerner say the telehealth boom will change healthcare.” According to the author, the

COVID-19 pandemic is among the main reasons for the faster adoption of telehealth technology.

The Chief Information Officer at Intermountain Healthcare recognizes the contribution of

Trump’s Administration in opening up telehealth access and hopes that future Medicare payment

rule will have proposals that outline how the government plans to expand telehealth services

reimbursement. Kimber Lockhart, the Chief Technology Officer at One Medical also mentions

that integration between in-office care and virtual care will help to increase the overall quality

and effectiveness of care.

The selected topic is significant in many ways. According to Chaet, Clearfield, Sabin,

and Skimming (2017), a critical aspect of telehealth entails its ability to respond to patients’

needs at any time and from any place. In other words, telehealth technology helps to improve the

quality of care and ensures that many people have access to it. Given that distance and time of

travel between care providers and patients can interfere with access to care, telehealth helps to

overcome geographical barriers that have the potential to limit access to care. The technology is
