Waarom is (theater)geschiedenis van belang?
1. Het heden kan niet begrepen worden zonder kennis van het verleden
2. Kennis van geschiedenis draagt bij aan (collectieve) identiteit
3. Grondige analyses kunnen alleen gedaan worden met voldoende kennis

Voorbeeld ITA:
9e/10e eeuw: Nieuwe opleiding theater in Europa, door de kerken → liturgisch
drama
Polyscenisch toneel: meerdere stukken tegelijk, de toeschouwer wandelt van stuk naar stuk
Ivo van Hove brengt dit terug in Scènes uit een Huwelijk



Positivisme
Max Hermann: eerste theaterwetenschapper uit de 20e eeuw.
→ Het doel van de theaterhistorie is het reconstrueren van verloren theater
voltooiingen tot ze met grote tastbaarheid terug zijn; het dingvast maken van het
onderzoeksobject.
Positivisme is alle wetenschappelijke kennis op basis van empirisch waarneembare kennis.
August Comte is de grondlegger van de sociologie (blootleggen van wetten van handelen)
en de vader van het positivisme.



Reconstructie
Door middel van directe en indirecte bronnen proberen positivisten het verleden zoveel
mogelijk te reconstrueren.
Objecttaal vs. Metataal: Gebouw, plaats, kostuums, decors vs. scenarios, recensies,
brieven, beschrijvingen.
Doelstelling is een perfecte reconstructie met hiervoor genoeg bewijs.
Maar het publiek wordt nooit meer hetzelfde, dus een perfecte reconstructie bestaat niet.

Conclusie
Een alomvattend idee dat altijd blijft bestaan is een positivistische illusie die
uitgaat van een objectieve geschiedschrijving → deze bestaat dus niet.
In plaats komt er een hermeneutisch model: alles draait om de interpretatie
→ Deze interpretatie geeft een samenhangend verhaal om een algemeen beeld
te geven.
Post-positivisme: bewustzijn van het perspectivisch karakter van geschiedenis.
