NURS 3321 module 1 reading
worksheet.
The first nursing research journal was started in the 1950’s
Name one type of data collection method that could be used in qualitative research.
Interviews, focus groups, observation, collecting stories, case studies.
Careful examination of all aspects of a study to judge its strengths, limitations meaning, and
significance is known as a Critical appraisal of the research.
Chapter One: Introduction to Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice. pages 1 – 28.
• What are the definitions of research vs. nursing research? What is evidence-based practice
(EBP)?
Research- to search again or examine carefully. A diligent, systematic inquiry or study that
validates and refines existing knowledge and develops new knowledge.
Nursing Research- A scientific process that validates and refines existing knowledge and
generates new knowledge that directly and indirectly influences nursing practice. g
Nursin
Research is the key to building.
Evidence-based practice (EBP)- evolves from the integration of the best research evidence with
clinical expertise and patients’ needs and values. The best EBP is the empirical knowledge
generated from the synthesis of quality study findings to address a practice problem.
• What three elements make up evidence-based practice? Make sure you can describe or
define them.
1. Best Research Evidence to develop guidelines from multiple studies and develop policies to
direct implementation of nursing interventions.
2. Clinical Expertise knowledge and skill of the healthcare professional who is providing care.
Nurse’s clinical expertise includes his or her years of clinical experience, current
, knowledge of the research + clinical literature, and educational preparation.
3. Patient’s needs and values which may focus on health promotion, illness prevention, acute
or chronic illness, rehab, and peaceful death.
, • My goals for this course are to: improve nursing care, patient outcomes, and the
healthcare system, and apply research evidence that provide a descriptive explanation,
prediction and control of phenomena in the clinical practice.
• Research evidence provides description, explanation, prediction, and control of phenomena
in our clinical practice. According to ch. 1, what does that really mean?
o Description: identifying and understanding the nature of nursing phenomena and
sometimes- the relationship among them
o Explanation: clarifies the relationships among phenomena and identifies
possible reasons why certain events occur
o Prediction: one can estimate the probability of a specific outcome in a given situation
possible screening methods to identify and prevent health problems
o Control: ability to write a prescription to produce the desired
results.
The quality of research affects not only pt. care but the power of nurse’s decision making. The
extensive number of clinical studies conducted in the last 30 years has greatly expanded the
scientific knowledge available for describing, explaining, predicting, and controlling phenomena
with the nursing practice.
• List the ways that knowledge is acquired in nursing.
Traditions- customs and trends
Authority-person in power institutes behavior
Borrowing- knowledge borrowed from other
fields
Trial and error- unknown outcomes used when situation is uncertain
Personal experience- knowledge by involvement
Role modeling- knowledge by imitation of an expert.
Intuition- gut feeling (an insight into or understanding of a situation or event as a whole that
usually cannot be explained logically)
Reasoning- processing and organizing ideas to reach a conclusion
a. Inductive reasoning 归纳推理: specific to general
b. Deductive reasoning 演绎推理: general to specific
• Name three types of research methods (starting on page 19) and briefly describe or
define each of them.
Quantitative- formal, objective, systematic process in which numerical data is used to obtain
information
a. Must be objective, no feelings and emotions.
b. Conducted to test theory by describing variables (descriptive research),
examining relationships among variables (correlational), determining cause and
effect interactions b/t variables (quasi-experimental and experimental research)
Qualitative- systematic, subjective approach used to describe life experience and situations and
give them meaning
Outcome research- Focuses on examining the result of care and determining the changes in
health status for patient.
