Would your problem identified in the Unit 2 discussion question lend itself to
a qualitative or quantitative design? What level of evidence (research
design) would best address the problem? Explain your answer.

Welcome to the discussion on research problems & designs!
You may begin posting on Sunday, January 20th, 2019 for credit.
Before diving into this discussion, reflect on your course outcomes for
2. Apply research principles to the interpretation of the content
of published research studies.
3. Evaluate published nursing research for credibility & clinical
significance related to evidence-based practice.
For this discussion, consider your research question & the focus of what
is being studied. How would you best obtain your answer? Would you
use a qualitative, quantitative, or possibly a mixed-methods design?
Remember, the design you choose should be in alignment with the
purpose of the study.
Please utilize the Threaded Discussion graded rubric as a guideline for
posting to the discussions. These are the criteria you will be graded on
which includes the use of citations & references according to current APA.
As always, please be sure to ask any questions you have in the
Q&A forum. Karen Hobbs

Entry Class,
Hope you are enjoying the long weekend! I just wanted to clarify that
although tomorrow is a holiday & you are not required to participate on
Monday in Canvas, your initial post for this week's discussion is still due
at 1159MST on Wednesday.
Looking forward to this week's discussion. Remember that last week's
discussion should have been one of the two research articles you will
need for the Unit 5 RUA. This week's article should be the second. Then
you can focus on the lessons for the next couple of weeks & use those &
the WebEx recordings to help you complete the Unit 5 RUA assignment.
Have a great
week.

RE-POST
Dear Prof. Hobbs & Class,
Improving diagnostic study as a means of addressing the increased
diagnostic errors in healthcare is a major concern. Identifying the source
of diagnostic error & establishing an improved diagnosis process in
health care need a substantial visualizing of the diagnostic study. The
text “Nursing Research: Reading, Using & Creating Evidence” demonstrates
how research can help in making nursing practice successful. According
to the author, a nursing student should utilize certain fundamentals &
appraise & utilize research & then translate it to guidelines that are
actionable in practice (Houser, 2018). Houser enumerates modern
methods such as the use of technology in the collection of data & use of

competent research as a means of researching in evidence-based
practice. Most importantly, the author
, emphasizes the need for students to not only read & use but also to
actively get engaged in the research process.
My focus is on the text “Improving Diagnosis in Health Care (2015)”
particularly on chapter four of the text. In this text, the National
Academies of Sciences, Engineering, & Medicine presents increased
engagement between patients & health care professionals educating &
training on diagnosis as a means of improving Health Care diagnosis
(National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, & Medicine, 2015).
According to the article’s section, a successful diagnostic process should
involve a partnership between patients, clinicians, patients’ families, &
professional who are involved in health care education & training. A
qualitative design was used to undertake a study titled “Diagnostic Error
in Health Care” in assessing the role of teamwork in improving the
diagnostic process. A selected committee dissected the issue of
teamwork in the diagnostic study & came up with a conclusion that a
team- based approach employed in the diagnostic process helps in
improving diagnosis. Additionally, there is a review of literature-
contained reports whose information is consistent with that of the
selected committee that well-coordinated teamwork helps deliver seedy
& accurate diagnosis hence improved diagnostic process.
According to Cobb & Forbes (2015), a qualitative design entails reviewing
of narrative data to interest the meaning of human behavior from the
st&point of the study participants themselves in their social context.
Based on this definition, the text used qualitative design to address the
issue of improving diagnostic study through increased teamwork. The
selected committee sought an underst&ing from the stakeholders in the
diagnostic process, & the tasks played by each of them & made
conclusions with a focus on the patients at the end of the diagnostic
process. The qualitative design helped bring on board the opinions of
other individuals in existing literature about the issue. The patients’
interest was put at the center with teamwork- orientation focused upon to
realize improved diagnostic process. There were efforts to underst& the
work system (context) of the occurrence of a diagnostic study & the way
team members as well as the tasks they perform in ensuring an improved
diagnostic process. The research design used was purely qualitative & I
consider the qualitative design used in the text as the appropriate
research design for my future research studies.
