QUESTIONS & ANSWERS WITH EXPLANATION

QUIZ #1
Muscular, cardiopulmonary, and metabolic
Question 1:
adaptations to exercise are known as the training effect.

A. True (the correct answer)

B. False

Explanation:
The training effect is defined as an increase in functional
capacity of muscles and other bodily tissues, which include
muscular, cardiopulmonary, and metabolic adaptations.

In the past decade, considerable research has shown that
the effects of training are specific to the manner and the
means in which the training is conducted. A given activity,
performed daily, recruits the same muscle fibers and
metabolic pathways over and over, giving rise to an
adaptive response known as the training effect. With
regard to its effect on muscle fibers, this training effect is
generally very specific to the activity. For example, the
effects of cycling on muscle fibers will not transfer to
jogging. On the other hand, the effects of training do
the transfer from one mode of activity to another with
regard to the body’s supply and support systems.
Research has shown that training effects on the respiratory
and cardiovascular systems resulting from one type of
aerobic activity tend to transfer to other types of aerobic
exercise.

, The reasons for this are fairly simple. In the early stages of
your training regimen, the inability of your muscle fibers to
use oxygen limits your ability to perform a specific task. As
your muscle fibers adapt to the stimulus provided by the
training, the demand for your cardiovascular system
increases. Your muscles, having become better able to use
the existing oxygen, figuratively are limited in their
performance by the inability of your heart, blood vessels,
and blood to deliver oxygen to them. Over time, your
cardiovascular system becomes more efficient, and more
oxygen is delivered to the working muscles. This increased
efficiency has potential benefits for all of your muscles, not
just the fibers used in a specific activity. Your ability to
deliver oxygen to all of your working muscles is enhanced.

Q: The body's automatic tendency to maintain a constant
internal body environment through various processes is called:

A. Body relativity

B. Cerebral equilibrium

C. Homeostasis (the correct answer)

D. Metabolic set point

E. None of the above

Explanation:
Although equilibrium and homeostasis seem almost
synonymous with one another, equilibrium refers to the
balanced state of a specific mechanism, whereas homeostasis
refers to a balance within the body as a whole. Metabolic set

, point refers specifically to the rate of metabolism the body
attempts to keep constant.
A good example of homeostasis in the body is the method by
which the body maintains a constant temperature of 98.6
degrees Fahrenheit. For example, if either physical exertion or
external heat causes your body temperature to rise, your brain
sends a signal to increase the rate of sweating. Heat is carried
away in sweat, which evaporates. If body temperature begins
to drop due to a cold external environment, shivering begins to
generate heat and keep the body temperature at that critical
98.6 degrees F. Other metabolic functions under homeostatic
control include the following:

A. Hormone production and concentration level maintenance

B. Maintenance of serum oxygen levels and carbon dioxide levels

C. pH balance in the blood and cells

D. Water content of cells and blood

E. Blood glucose levels and other nutrient levels in the cell

F.Metabolic rate

Q: BMR stands for:

A. Basic memory retention

B. Bad muscle recovery

C. Bone myofascial release

D. Basal metabolic rate (the correct answer)

E. None of the above

Explanation:

, Basal Metabolic Rate is the number of calories required to keep
your body functioning at rest. BMR is also known as your body's
metabolism; therefore, any increase to your metabolic weight,
such as exercise, will increase your BMR.

Q: Anabolism and catabolism occur at the same time
throughout the body.

A. True (the correct answer)

B. False

Explanation:
In order for metabolism to occur, the body needs both energy
(catabolism) and building blocks (anabolism) for growth and
repair. Anabolism and catabolism occur simultaneously and
constantly. However, they differ in magnitude depending on
the level of activity or rest and on when the last meal was
eaten. When anabolism exceeds catabolism, net growth
occurs. When catabolism exceeds anabolism, the body has a
net loss of substances and body tissues and may lose weight.
