Effective communication is a learned skill that nurses have practiced from basic nursing
education. Nurses engage in communication every day as they listen to and advocate
for their patients. Effective communication and listening skills are essential for nurses to
initiate and develop interpersonal relationships with patients (Mason, Gardener, Outlaw,
& O’Grady, 2016). When it comes to participating in healthy policymaking, there are
requirements specific to conflict engagement skills. My policy priority issue involves the
prevalence of childhood and adolescent obesity. It is the duty of health care providers
and policymakers to maximize the effort in curbing the epidemic of childhood obesity. As
we are aware, childhood obesity are associated with chronic illnesses, and social and
psychological implications that can persist into adulthood. Although this public health
issue involves multiple levels of government, my most immediate target will be at the
local level. The vice president of the Piscataway Board of Education in New Jersey,
Alexandra Lopez, will be contacted to discuss the implications and recommendations on
the issue of childhood obesity in the school district.
Before reaching out to the local school district, it is essential to research the public
health concern with latest updates, legislation, and statistics. Doing one’s homework on
the subject matter gains expertise and allows fluid communication with a policymaker
(Mazurowski, 2013). This will enhance my ability to communicate effectively. Clarifying
the issue in a concise manner and incorporating other possible variables are important.

The best approach in this setting would be initial contact made by e-mail before
following up via telephone. I would introduce myself to her and briefly discuss my
objectives before requesting a personal one-to-one meeting. Once a meeting is
confirmed, I plan on creating a PowerPoint presentation to elaborate my proposal and
recommend a course of action on reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity in the
school district of Piscataway. When meeting the vice president of the school board, I
will be aware of basic conversation etiquette and adapt to the level of formality
required for the presentation. The importance of influence and persuasion is essential
in defining effective lobbyists. Successful lobbyists apply different strategies to change
certain behaviors and promote results. According to Mazurowski (2013), there are two
basic styles of influencing: push and pull. Push is about pressing someone to a change
by reasoning, offering rewards, or giving punishments. Pull is about motivating
someone to a change by showing the possibilities that will result from said change
(Mazurowski, 2013). I would like to incorporate the pull method of influencing because
this approach focuses on finding a common ground. This will more likely increase the
chance of a positive collaboration. A well-planned and organized strategy is crucial in
preparing a meeting with a lobbyist and delivering a clear and inspiring message to
