More nurses today are choosing to further their careers and develop their professional
careers by becoming Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRN). It is important that the nurse
understand the states regulatory, educational and licensure requirements of the state that they will
be practicing in. The purpose of the professional development plan is to guide in completion of
specific career goals set and focus on the transition from Registered Nurse to APRN. In this
paper, I will describe my professional development plan about my personal and career goals,
determine my weaknesses, strengths and career objectives through personal assessment, and
discuss the leadership skills necessary for nurse practitioner.
APN Scope of Practice-State of Kansas
The state board of nursing is the regulatory body of the nursing profession of the
individual state. In Kansas, the nurse practice act details the who, what, where, when, how, and
why, of nursing practice, as well as the regulations and guidance of the professionalism and
adherence to the ethical standards and values. There have been various roles and responsibilities
given to the APRN and this includes proper the use of critical thinking and decision making from
analysis of patient information found in the assessment, diagnosis of disease, individual and
population assessment, and prescription of medicines. The scope of practice is now broad with
the ability to discuss treatment and undertake medical diagnosis for acute or chronic illnesses
(Nardi & Diallo, 2014). As a nurse practitioner, the nurse can apply a variety of alternatives in
their practice, and function as healthcare providers, researchers, educators and administrators.
