Freedom and responsibility
Existential therapists believe that our lives are affected by the choices we make
therefore, individuals are expected to take responsibility of their choices. Individuals
who fail to accept the responsibility of their personal choices are considered as
unauthentic. These individuals often blame external forces for their bad choices.
Whereas, individuals who are aware of their own lives and self- evaluate are authentic
beings. This simply means the individuals acknowledges their responsibility of their own
choices (Corey, 2017).
Although Existential therapists preach freedom, choice and responsibility, they may lead
to existential guilt, this is the guilt that is experienced when individuals know the
possibility of the unfulfilled. It is when a choice is chosen knowing that there are other
choices that can be chose (Murdock, 2013).
Striving for identity and relationship to others
Creating an identity is when an individual is aware that they are unique from others, and
yet they keep in mind that others are also differently unique and must be able to relate
to that (Corey, 2017).
Existential therapists believe that when a person experiences loneliness, it is due to the
inability to create a bond with one’s surroundings and people. Individuals may go
through phases of:
- The courage to be: This usually happens when an individual usually fears to be
viewed as a nobody, once they start to show their true selves. However, if the
individual is able to confront this fear and deal with it, it does not seem to be
overwhelming anymore (Corey, 2017).
- The experience of aloneness: This is part of human condition that is normal. The
feeling of aloneness usually is a result of realizing that we cannot depend on
others for our own confirmation. This emphasizes the fact that we are obliged to
