UNIT 10: USING EXTERNAL RESOURCES IN
THE CLASSROOM
1.Introduction to Unit 10:
We will be exploring how to find and use resources from different locations.
2.Coursebooks:
Coursebooks can be a great source of material and are particularly useful when you
are new to teaching.
What is in a coursebook?
1. The coursebook itself. This is the book that the students will use. It will contain
texts and activities for the student.
2. A workbook, that provides extra activities and materials to build on the
learning. Some also have online links, to help promote further learning.
3. The teacher’s book, which will usually provide suggestions and ideas for the
lesson, as well as the answers to questions and transcripts of any listening
material in the coursebook.
3.Creating your own materials:
4.Authentic Materials:
We use the term authentic material to describe objects, text and audio that aren’t
written for or already adapted for English language learners.
For a reading lesson, authentic materials might include:
• Extracts from books
• Magazines
• Newspapers
• Blogs
• Leaflets, pamphlets and information guides
• In a listening lesson, we could use:
• Vlogs
• Podcasts
• Films and TV
• Adverts
• Songs

, • Announcements and reports
5.Music, film and sound:
An English language lesson does not need to simply involve your speaking voice.
Introducing music, film and other sounds into the classroom can break up the lesson
and make it more engaging for the students.
• A recording of scary sounds
Adjectives – scared, frightened, terrified, cold…
• Dance
Dancing to instructions from a teacher.
• Tongue twisters
Tongue twisters provide practice in forming sounds that may or may not exist
in your students’ native language.
• Youtube / films
It means that students hear different accents and voices, which helps to add a
different dimension to the lesson.
• Poems
Poems can be a great way to introduce a topic or theme.
6.Realia :
Realia
Realia are objects from real life that you use in the classroom. They make your
classes more interesting and can provide the basis of many easily planned lesson.
• Newspapers
Hand out a short article on American cities and ask students to list the names
of all the cities they can find in one minute. This develops the student’ ability
to scan read.
• Food Packets
Providing they are clean, food packets are good authentic materials to use in
your lesson.
• Family Photos
Talking about your family is a great way to revise all the family vocabulary
you’ve been teaching without students even being aware they are revising.
• The Contents Of Your Kitchen Drawer
No sharp objects. Revision of verbs to do with cooking.
• A Restaurant Menu
A menu could be used to practise food vocabulary – you could even ask
students to write a recipe. It could also provide lots of practise in requesting /
offering in roleplay or pair work set in a restaurant.
• Items of clothing
Name items of clothing. Practice colours, adjectives for sizes, roleplay set in a
clothes shop.
• Christmas Cards
The scenes on the front of the cards provide lots of language practice.
