Level: Distinction
Introduction
I am an intern as a IT specialist at a visual company. As a part of my contract, I must encourage a
greater use of IT within the company’s production. My supervisor has asked me to prepare a report
to the artistic director as well as her team explaining the ways that digital graphics can be used.
Digital graphics basically means any graphic that has been generated using a computer. This means
that the graphic can even be hand drawn then traced onto the computer. An example of such
graphic is Pokémon, all the images as well as the series has been generated using computer power.
Back then using Computer generated Graphics, was very uncommon as it was new technology
however nowadays this technology is all around us, we see it on Television Adverts, in Games as well
as on Websites. It has clearly become a part of our generation.
There are two main types of CGI:
● 2D - The first time 2D CGI was implemented within a move it was in 1937, by
Walt Disney. It was not a fully animated movie, as it was mostly drawn by hand
and then traced into a computer. However, since then 2D Computer Graphics has
come a long way, due to the advancement in technology, software as well as
techniques
● 3D – The first time 3D CGI was used back in 1960’s however it was very
ineffective back then. The first real time, this technology has been implemented
successfully and efficiently is in 1982 movie Tron, and it used a technique of
photon-mapping to successfully showcase light in such way to make objects look
three-dimensional
17/A.P1 - Explain the purpose and legal considerations
for different digital graphic products.
Prior to any digital graphics being made, considerations must be taken to ensure that all the graphic
will be original and lawful. The main laws to be considered are:
Certification and Ethical content – This is to ensure that all the graphic created, is only seen by age
appropriate people. Therefore, in video games there is the recommended PEGI rating to determine
the recommended age, to stop children from viewing violent content. In GTA, their game was rated
lower, however once they forgot to delete a game scene which was rated 18. This infuriated the
public, and as a result Rockstar Games had to pay a fine, for lying to the rating commission.
Human Rights Act 1998 – This is to ensure that any graphics created is not resembling or making fun
of any person in real life slandering their name or harming them. An example of this is the current
trend “Fortnite” one of their characters resembles an ex-employee without their permission, and in
a game where that character can be killed, this seems very in-moral. Eventually, Epic games and the
employee settled in court.
When re-using somebody else’s work Laws that must be considered:
Designs and Patents Act 1998 – This is to ensure that original work, stays assigned to the original
author and that it cannot be reused at all without the permission of original author. This is to protect

the intellectual property of the author, as well as prevent monetary gain from somebody else’s
work. Copyright is automatically given to the original author if they can prove that the specific piece
of work was made on that day.
Copyright infringement – This is to ensure that no body without the permission of an original user
can slightly modify the work and claim it as theirs. This is to protect the intellectual property of the
author, as well as prevent monetary gain from somebody else’s work. This Law also protects the
name of the original work from being slandered. Such as Samsung taking Apples’ “Slide to unlock
design”.
Creative Commons licences – Means that work is permitted by the original author for re-use and
distribution under certain rules.
Nowadays, this technology is so widely recognised that it is used within many industrial sectors.
Those sectors being Education, with interactive whiteboard and specialist software. Advertising,
showcasing the product by visually enhancing it using CGI. Entertainment, also is a big industry
relying on this Technology when releasing new films or games. Science industry, has made a massive
use of this technology, through using it for medical purposes, such as simulation of an operation, to
train Doctors as well as help them discover solutions for illnesses. In Computer Aided Design it is
used to, visually see a product before it being made. It is also used by Estate Agents to help clients
visualise a house in virtual reality before purchase.
Whenever any graphics is made, a device with correct specification must be used to be able to use
all the professional software such as Maya or Blender. The author, (Charlie,2017) insists that in this
industry it is crucial for a computer to have at least 8gb of ram, Any i7 CPU, At least 2GB GTX 970
GPU, and any amount of SSD storage. This is in order, to ensure that all the professional tools work
errorless and efficiently keeping the rendering or processing time to the minimum. For amateurs
wanting to get into computer generated graphics, this may be quite costly.
Any Digital Graphics made, has a purpose. Whether it is just to inform, express or relate. Targeting a
specific group of people, it is normally performed for by Advertisement industry, to either make
them aware or present the product. In many cases, the CAD industry uses this technology to
examine a product before being made, ensuring that it solves their problem, by matching the
requirements and potentially explore new ideas, adding on new improvements to products. Such as:
● Need for Speed. The racing game franchise giants, their audience is 12+
of any gender, as well as a car fanatic. The purpose of all their graphics, is
a mixture of entertainment as it is a game, yet they are trying to educate
their users about cars. Overall, they are matching their purpose
exceedingly well, because the cars implemented within the game resemble
the car in real life, as well as through providing information with the
correct car name, the user can learn a lot about the cars, they present.
Their catalogue of cars is increasing, as every new game is created
meaning that they are keeping up with the car industry, while giving the
user some sort of an experience. When creating their graphic, need for
speed franchise needed to be careful about copyright infringement, unless
they had a creative commons license with all of car brands, allowing for
re-creation of cars in computer generated graphics.
● Architectural Visualisation. Ensuring that the building can be seen before
it’s built, giving an insight to its usefulness as well as functionality. The
target audience of the visualisation is the investors, as well as the
construction workers. The purpose of this visualisation is to ensure that
