Pre-Lab Questions
”1.What are chromosomes made of?”
Long strands of coiled DNA.
”2.Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis. ”
Mitosis and meiosis are very similar in that they both have an interphase, prophase, metaphase,
anaphase, telopahse, and cytokinesis except that meiosis involves a second round of cell
division while mitosis does not. Mitosis produces 2 diploid cells while meiosis produces 2
haploid cells in meiosis 1 and in meiosis 2 a total of 4 haploid gamete cells will have been
produced. Mitosis daughter cells are identical while meiosis cells are not.
”3.Cancer is a disease related to uncontrolled cell division. Investigate two known causes for
these rapidly dividing cells and use this knowledge to invent a drug that would inhibit the
growth of cancer cells.”
Two known cause of rapidly dividing cells would be mutations in genes that either accelerate
cell division rates or inhibit normal cell cycle controls including mutations to gene p53 which is a
tumor surpressor. The invention of a drug that acted like the protein in p53 that was able to
suppress the urge for a cell to divide uncontrollably and therefore prevent the overgrowth of
cells which could ultimately lead to tumors and cancer, we could prevent cancer from growing.
Experiment 1: Observation of Mitosis in a Plant Cell
Table 1: Mitosis Predictions
Interphase – 22 hours
Predictions Prophase – 40 minutes
Metaphase – Cytokinesis – 20 minutes
Interphase lasts anywhere from 18-24 hours while mitosis only
occupies 1 to 2 hours of the cell cycle. We predict that
interphase will last 22 hours, as supported above, with prophase
Supporting Evidence
being the longest of the mitosis stages at 40 minutes and the
rest of the stages taking approximately 20 minutes totally out to
be a 24 hour cell cycle.
