The purpose of this experiment was to find the attenuation factor for beta radiation ( ). By

placing different radiative sources into a Geiger-Mueller counter, it became possible to measure

these intensities and plot them in a graph and find the slope of the trends. This slope was used to

find which was 0.173. Compared to the expected theoretical value of 0.20 g/cm there was a

percent error of 13.5%. Even though the error was significant, the results still were consistent

with the downward trends of the experiment proving this experiment met the objective.

OBJECTIVE:

The first objective of this experiment was to be introduced to and to learn to use new instruments

normally used in nuclear physics as well as revisit the tools and software normally used in a

physics lab. These were used to understand mass thickness attenuation and how the passages of

beta rays are affected through different thicknesses of polyethylene.
