Ethical considerations
Ethical principles was considered when conducting research for this report.
Kayla (the athlete) was informed what her role will be in the research study,
she was also informed that she has a right to privacy, anonymity and
confidentiality and that she can withdraw from the case study at any time
(Tangwa, 2009). Kayla gave informed consent to take part in this study
(APPENDIX C on page 13).
Background information on athlete
Kayla grew up in a ‘sporty’ household, her older brother competed
competitively (Athletics) and her older sister was extremely good in Netball.
She excelled well throughout her school career, Kayla has always been
motivated and determined, and when I met Kayla in grade 8, it was clear that
field hockey was something that she was extremely good at, by the time we
had the opportunity to compete together in the U14 school hockey team, Kayla
already played for the U13 Provincial hockey team the previous year. Kayla
also played for her hostels’ first team at the NWU, and is keeping her options
open to hopefully be drafted to play for the South African Hockey Team one
day. More information is provided in APPENDIX A (Intake Summary) on page
11.
Description of contacts
22 MAY 2021
My initial contact with Kayla was on the 22nd of May. Kayla wasn’t in town so
we scheduled a Zoom meeting that lasted an hour, she was very relaxed and
willing to take part in this report.
05 JUNE 2021
Kayla was home for the weekend so we scheduled a meeting a her parents
house because I knew it would be the most comfortable environment for her
and the session was 60 minutes long. We started with her overall experience
in the competitive field and what notable affects competing had on the way she
viewed sport.
