● Aparthied
○ 1948 - National Party comes to power and voted to implement a series of
segregational laws, together known as Apartheid
○ Enforces the policy through a series of laws
■ Apartheid was a social and political party of racial segregation and
discrimination
■ In Afrikaans, Apartheid means “apartness”
● Segregation
○ Separated SA into whites and nonwhites, restricting where blacks could live work
travel sit, restrooms, eat etc.
■ Blacks could not vote or participate in govt
○ In 1951, govt officials passed Bantu Authorities Act
■ Placed non-white population in homelands
■ Whites owned 80% of land while only being 10% of population
■ 9 million SA’s were excluded from participating in government
● Life under Apartheid
○ Allowed whites to grow wealthy and powerful while blacks suffered
○ Afrikaners lived in up-scale neighborhoods
○ Native SA’s lived in slums or in Bantustans
■ Bantustans were “homelands” for natives to live on
■ Poor quality of land, unfit for large populations
○ SA’s were unable to leave their Bantustans w/o passport
● ANC and Nelson Mandela
○ In the 50’s the African National Congress began to fight apartheid
○ Increase rights of native Africans
○ ANC was declared illegal by SA’s govt and members were arrested
○ Nelson Mandela was a leading member
○ Believed in nonviolent protests
○ Mandela accused of plotting against the only white govt
■ Arrested at 46, sent to life in prison at Robben island where forced to do
hard labor
● Only allowed a single visitor every 6 months
● FW De Klerk
○ In 1989 de Klerk elected president and worked to dismantle the apartheid
○ Almost immediately, de Klerk got rid of ANC ban
○ Released Mandela from Prison in 1990
■ Served 27 years
○ Worked with Mandela to end Apartheid
○ 1993 Mandela and de Klerk shared the Nobel Peace Prize
○ 1994 Apartheid officially ended and SA held first all race election
■ 1994 Election - Mandela wins by landslide
