In deze studie is onderzocht of sensate focus therapie of mindfulness therapie de
relatietevredenheid van stellen met seksuele problemen over tijd kunnen
verbeteren en of de effecten verschillen tussen mannen en vrouwen. De
onderzoeksgegevens zijn verzameld bij tien verschillende therapeuten van
stellen. Het onderzoek is uitgevoerd met 150 stellen, waarvan 150 mannen en
150 vrouwen, met een gemiddelde leeftijd van 40 jaar. Middels een multi-level
analyse is onderzocht hoe relatietevredenheid zich ontwikkelden binnen de
verschillende condities (sensate focus, mindfulness -en controleconditie)
gedurende tien weken, waarbij sekse-gerelateerde verschillen zijn meegenomen.
De resultaten toonden een significant sterkere toename in de sensatie focus -en
mindfulness therapie ten opzichte van de controle conditie. Daarnaast
verschilden de effecten van de verschillende condities op relatietevredenheid
tussen mannen en vrouwen. Voor mannen bleek sensate focus therapie
effectiever bij het verbeteren van de relatietevredenheid en voor vrouwen was
dit mindfulness. Vooral vrouwen laten een significante stijging zien in de
relatietevredenheid na het volgen van mindfulness therapie ten opzichte van de
mannen. De conclusie is dat zowel sensate focus therapie als mindfulness
therapie de relatietevredenheid van stellen verbeteren, waarbij sensate focus
therapie vooral effectief is bij mannen en mindfulness bij vrouwen. Bij vrouwen
is dit effect het sterkst. Een belangrijke implicatie van deze resultaten zijn het
potentiële effect die de twee verschillende therapieën hebben op
relatietevredenheid. Het wordt dan ook geadviseerd dit verder te onderzoeken.
