With reference to the documentary, the story of Staff, the primary aim of this essay is to
discuss the concept of globalisation. The essay entails some pertinent concepts like;
dimensions of globalisation, the essay also introduce and discuss schools of thought debating
around globalisation. According to the information portrayed by this documentary the most
appropriate school of thought presented is the hyperglobalists. In this presentation and
drawing from the documentary globalisation is viewed as a negative phenomenon. The essay
is also going to discuss the contradictions and responses to globalisation. Very briefly the
essay will evaluate the documentary.

Globalisation is a complex concept and so it is defined in more different ways, this essay
introduces three definitions. Firstly it is defined as the growing interdependence of human
societies and human interaction in a global scale (Sholte, 2005). Secondly is global
transformation of societies and human interaction in political, social and economic realm.
Thirdly it is defined as the interaction of the contemporary world (Sholte, 2005).
Globalisation is also divided into four categories that is; political, economic, financial, and
cultural globalisation. The essay focuses primarily on economic and political globalisation
since these are the bases of the introduced documentary.

Briefly, economic globalisation is the movement of capital and labour. The documentary also
makes reference to the global movement of people in search of employment. Economic
globalisation involves integration of economic activity that is, trade investment across
continents, regions and national borders (Castells, 1997). In support of this point, the
documentary mentions the location of American factories overseas. Economic globalisation is
also characterised by, neo-liberalism which focuses on the maximisation of profits. It also
involves the growth of multinational and transnational cooperation’s and global labour
market (Castells, 1997).

Political globalisation involves reduced sovereignty and power of the state. The state or
government is overpowered by the cooperation’s (Giddens, 1993). Drawing the example from
the documentary; the government is portrayed as being controlled by the cooperation.
