ASSIGNMENT 02

, PART A
1. Simplify- means to reduce an expression into fewer terms which are easier to work
with e.g. 2x =4 can be simplified into x=2. Evaluate-means to find the values of the
expression when the variable is replaced with a given number e.g. 2x-4 when x =3.
Factorise- means to break an expression down into its factors.

2. Rounding off 34.56 to the nearest one decimal place is a non-routine. The answer
is 35.

3. A number is a mathematical object used to count, measure and label e.g. natural
numbers 1, 2, 3… A numeral is a figure, symbol, or group of figures or symbols
denoting a number e.g. 3, 49 and twelve are all numerals. So the number is an idea
and the numeral is how we write it.
5 (a) 6798340
Divisible by 6
6+7+9+8+3+4+0=37
3+7=10...Therefore it is not divisible by 6, 9 and 11
(b) 54786978
Divisible by 6
5+4+7+8+6+9+7+8=54
5 + 4=9… Therefore it is divisible by 6 and 9 but not divisible by 11.
6.1 The first approach to making them understand about prime number is to let them
know about the divisibility fact about prime number. A prime number can be divided,
without a remainder, only by itself and by 1 e.g. 17 can only be divided by 17 and by 1;
41 can only be divided by 1 and itself. Thus 17 and 51 are prime numbers
Procedure
The only even prime number is 2. All the other even numbers can be divided by 2.The
sum of a number`s digits is a multiple of 3, that number can be divided by 3. No prime
number is greater than 5 ends in a 5. Any number greater than 5 that ends in 5 can be
divided by 5. Zero and 1 are not considered prime numbers. Except for 0 and 1, a
number is either a prime number or a composite number. A composite number is
defined as a number, greater than 1, that is not prime.
