Project Management
Week 1: Tuesday

In-session

Project Management (PM) is a holistic approach that strives to represent the interest of all affected
functions in an organization. So primary function is COORDINATION. Therefore, PM cannot be subject
to the control of any functional departments.

Mission

- How you will get to where you want to be
- Question: “What do we do? What makes us different?”
- Concentrates on the present leading to the future
- Defines the customer(s), critical processes and it informs you about the desired level of
performance.

Vision

- Where you want to be
- Question: “Where do we aim to be?”
- Outlines what the organisation wants to be.
- Concentrates on the future (on the goal). It is a source of inspiration

Strategy

- Include short- and long-term goals and explain how those goals will be achieved.
- Focus on present actions and outcomes needed to move closer to achieve the mission

planning, organizing, and directing the completion of specific projects for an organization
while ensuring these projects are on time, on budget, and within scope

Skills, Problem Solving Skills

- Functional organizations: Hierarchical type of organization (e.g. Manufacturing, Production)
o Employees are grouped as per their area of specialization supervised by their
functional manager with expertise in the same field
o Project stakeholders: All people affected of the project

The project manager needs to align with other department's leaders to achieve implication
of changes at the employee level.
+ efficiency, less bureaucracy, clear hierarchical setup; - department leaders might not favour
the project, be protective of their teams to not get overwhelmed by tasks

- Projectized organizations: Project manager has its own department
o The members of the project team are chosen and delegated from the units
