Introduction:

The South African educational system is still faced with many challenges just like the
rest of the world. The reason for this is because children have learning disabilities
and the school system has either tried removing these barriers in the mainstream
schooling system or developed proper special educational schools or systems.
South Africa has decided to remove barriers of learning since 1994 by introducing
policy that has led to inclusive education for students with learning disabilities. This
can be read in the white paper 6. I will discuss how children with barriers should be
handled in the mainstream classroom with current practical examples based on
research evidence. Teacher educational programs have also been introduced, I will
give my view on this if these have been affective or not. Its important to not
discriminate against children with barriers to learning as we have a history of
discrimination in South Africa. All attempts must be made to remove these barriers.

Definition of inclusive Education:

My personal definition to inclusive education is students with disabilities must not be
segregated from schools but allow them to be integrated into the mainstream
education system.

The white paper six says that all children and youth can learn and need support in
line with their developmental needs. Aiding education structures, systems and
learning methodologies to meet the needs of all learners. Respecting and
acknowledging the difference in learners such as gender, age, ethnicity, language,
class, disability and diseases. Learning takes place in the community and at home in
formal and informal settings. Teacher have to change their attitudes to children with
learning disabilities and adopt new teaching methods to meet the teacher’s needs.
Maximising the learners participation in the curriculum and minimising barriers to
learning. (SA, July 2001) (Anon., )

According to the UNICEF website. Inclusive education is the most effective way to
give all children a fair chance to go to school, learn and develop the skills they need
to thrive. Inclusive education means all children in the same classrooms, in the same
