WEEK 3: NEW REPRODUCTIVE TECHNOLOGIES (VOICETHREAD)
Respond to a current advance in reproductive technology. Post a 1- to 2-minute VoiceThread
recapping the news article and providing your summary of the ethical and legal issues for
providers, the parents, and the unborn child.
In addition to posting your individual VoiceThread, you must comment on two other students'
VoiceThreads. VoiceThread technology does not need to be used in the replies, but you are
always welcome to use it! Remember, they must still be quality posts. Simply stating, "Nice job,
I agree" is not sufficient. Examples of quality posts include
providing additional information to the discussion;
elaborating on previous comments from others;
presenting explanations of concepts or methods to help fellow students;
presenting reasons for or against a topic in a persuasive fashion;
sharing your own personal experiences that relate to the topic; and
providing a URL and explanation for an area you researched on the Internet.
For instructions on how to use VoiceThread to complete this assignment, watch the video below.

Great VT, you gave very relevant information that is affecting people from all walks of life. This
had me thinking of the struggles within the VA system, I found this article concerning their issue
with IVF for combat soldiers and families.
The Department of Veterans Affairs will begin covering costs for in vitro fertilization and
adoptions for combat-wounded veterans struggling with infertility because of their injuries,
giving thousands of young veteran families fresh hope at starting a family, advocates say.
President Obama signed a bill last week that allows the agency to pay the costs for the next two
years from existing VA health-care funds. The provision was authored by U.S. Sen. Patty Murray
(D-Wash.), who said she is also pushing to fund the services permanently.
Because of the widespread use of improvised explosive devices in combat zones, those who
served in Iraq and Afghanistan have suffered greater rates of spinal cord and genital injuries than
in past conflicts, leaving many veterans unable to conceive naturally.
But for more than 24 years, VA was banned from covering the costs of IVF by a law that Murray
and others say is outdated. Congress passed the ban because of conservative opposition to
assisted reproduction. Today, however, IVF is widely accepted around the world.

ICSI, or intracytoplasmic sperm injection, is a technique in which sperm is when is injected
directly into an egg and then the embryo is transferred to a woman's uterus after fertilization is
successful. This technique is often used when it has been determined that normal fertilization is
not possible.
Being a surrogate I am familiar with this particular type of procedure, but I find it exciting to
think about how the procedure itself is done. The fact that we have the capability of using a
VERY thin needle to inject sperm into an egg that is held by a specialized pipette is awesome!
Your presentation was very clear and the timing of your presentation was accurate. I did learn a
lot about surrogacy and it is actually the topic of interest for me. I do think that surrogacy is an
