Hello Professor and Class,
According to Maria Korolov (2019), biometrics are physical or behavioral human characteristics
that can be used to digitally identify a person to grant access to systems, devices or data. The
physical identifiers are described as being immutable and device independent. I am sure most of
us, at some point or another have utilized one of the physical characteristics, with regards to our
cell phone or other electronic device; specifically, our fingerprints. However, the behavioral
identifies are a newer approach; and typically, they are used in conjunction with another method
due to their lack of reliability.
Biometric systems are mainly used for identification and access control or for identifying
individuals who are under surveillance (n.d.). The basic premise of biometric authentication is
that every person can be accurately identified by their intrinsic physical or behavioral traits. This
form of authentication is/has become increasingly common in corporate and public security
systems, consumer electronics and point of sale (POS) applications. Convenience has been the
driving force behind biometric verification, specifically since there are no passwords to
remember or security tokens to carry.
Although biometric systems can improve security, we must not forget about the advantages and
disadvantages that may be encountered while using these systems. Biometric systems can be
beneficial because they are:
• hard to fake or steal, unlike passwords;
• easy and convenient to use;
• generally, the same over the course of a user's life;
• nontransferable; and
• efficient because templates take up less storage.
Some disadvantages include the following:
• It is costly to get a biometric system up and running.
