Motif(s) and
explanation Feeling guilty
In the story, many people felt guilty. Miro felt guilty for the
death of Artkin, who was killed by a sniper. Kate felt guilty
about her attempt to escape. She thought this made the
, situation even worse. She felt responsible for the children
and because of her attempt to escape the hijackers were
even more agressive towards the children. The father of
Mark felt guilty for the death of his son Ben, because Mark
sent Ben to the bus where he was murdered.
Sacrifice
In the story, many people sacrified things or people. Mark
sacrified his son Ben to deliver a package to the men on the
bridge. Mark knew it was risky but he did it for the native
country. Also the hijackers sacrified people for the war. They
feel like they have to do it.
Identity
The identity of the hijackers had to be anonymous all the
time. Sometimes, they wore masks. Also the identity of Mark
influence his life. Nationalism is in his identity. For exemple,
his son dies of his decision to sent him to the bus. He sent
him to the bus to get more information about the hijackers.
Genre Thriller
Theme(s) The theme of the story is the obsession to kill people. Patriotism
plays a major role in this. Innocent people become victims of this.
Social setting Middle class environment.
Geographical The story takes place in Amerika. They did not tell exactly where.
setting
Historical The story takes place around 1975.
setting
Timespan The story of ben takes a few days. The story about the hijackers
takes one day.
Order The story with the hijacking is in chronological order with a few
flashbacks and flash forwards. The story of Ben and his father is
told in the future, the story takes place after the bus hijacking.
Narrator The storylines of Miro and Kate are told in the third person. There
was the whole time a switch between the storylines of Miro and
Kate. “Why are you doing this?” she asked, trying to keep any
harshness out of her voice, needing to seem friendly and
interested. “It’s must what we must do,” he answered in his
carefully measured English, as if he were walking a verbal
tightrope.
The storylines of Ben and his father Mark are told in the first
person. I wondered how much she knew about what happened on
the bridge. “I’d rather not talk about it,” I said. “Not just yet”.
