El cráneo se compone de 22 huesos. Todos son inmóviles, excepto la mandíbula, y se unen entre sí
mediante suturas. Pueden dividirse en bóveda craneal y esqueleto facial.
La bóveda craneal es la porción superior, que constituye la cavidad craneal y alberga el encéfalo.
Está formada por huesos temporales y parietales, frontal, esfenoides, etmoides y occipital.
El esqueleto facial es la porción inferior; está formado por los huesos nasales, lagrimales,
cigomáticos, maxilares, conchas nasales inferiores, palatinos y hueso vómer.

También los podemos dividir en huesos pares y huesos impares:
HUESOS PARES:
- Maxilares superiores
- Palatinos
- Cornetes nasales inferiores
- Propios de la nariz

- Malares o cigomáticos
- Temporales
- Parietales
HUESOS IMPARES:
- Mandíbula o maxilar inferior
- Vómer
- Etmoides
- Frontal
- Esfenoides
- Occipital
VISIÓN ANTERIOR DEL CRÁNEO:
En la visión anterior del cráneo se encuentran, en la zona superior, la
frente y, en la zona inferior, las órbitas, la región nasal, el maxilar y la
mandíbula.
• Hueso frontal: Forma el reborde orbitario superior y por
encima de ese reborde se encuentran unas elevaciones
denominadas arcos superciliares; forma parte del reborde
orbitario medial; forma parte del reborde orbitario lateral
(mediante una prolongación denominada apófisis cigomática
del frontal, que se articula con la apófisis frontal de hueso
cigomático); en la región media del reborde orbitario se
localiza el agujero o escotadura supraorbitaria.
