BIBLE STUDY PROJECT: OBSERVATION TEMPLATE
Passage: Acts 9:36-43
A. I have read Acts 9:36-43 in both a formal translation (KJV, NKJV, NASB, ESV, or CSB)
and a functional translation (NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please
use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com
o Yes
o No
B. Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities
and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. You may list as many
similarities and differences that you find as long as you meet the minimum amount.
1. Similarity – Both translations specifically list Joppa as the city where Tabitha lives.
2. Similarity – Both translations say that Peter kneeled beside her and prayed.
3. Difference – The NIV says her name is Tabitha, but it is Dorcas in Greek. The KJV
doesn’t specifically list the language from which it (Tabitha) is translated.
4. Difference – In the NIV, it quotes the two men as saying, “Please come at once!”
The KJV speaks a general statement saying that they ‘[desired] him that he would
not delay to come to them.’
5. Difference - When Tabitha was risen, the KJV says Peter called the saints and
widows. The ESV says he called believers and especially widows.

2. Plot: (50-100 words)
Tabitha (or Dorcas) helped the poor by her charitable deeds. One day, she sickened
and passed away. Since Peter was nearby, two men were sent to fetch him. When he
came, he was shown all the items Tabitha had made by the weeping widows. Peter
prayed at her bedside and said ‘Tabitha, arise’ to her. She was presented to the
believers. Many believed because of it. Peter stays in Joppa with Simon the tanner.
3. Story structure: (50-100 words)
Note: Plot and Story Structure are not the same thing (see the tutorial and student example)
Introduction: Tabitha helps the poor and widows by making garments for
them.
Inciting Incident: Tabitha gets sick.
Rising Action: Tabitha dies.
Climax: Two disciples find Peter since he is not far away. Peter prays over
her and raises her from the dead.
Falling Action: Tabitha is presented to the saints and widows.
Resolution: Many believed from hearing this.
