1.1 Define African philosophy. (5)
African philosophy contemplates the perceptions of time, personhood, space and other
subjects. Africana philosophy can be formally defined as a critical thinking by Africans and
people of African descent on their experiences of reality. African knowledge can’t just be
considered for some academic purpose. It must also keep in mind why and how such
knowledge ought to affect society. This is why an African philosophy of education can be
such a powerful tool for the continent’s post-colonial universities as they work to become
producers of knowledge that has a public concern. This is particularly important for African
universities. The continent’s citizens have to be initiated into ways of being and living that
emphasise human cooperation, openness to debate and discussion, and responsibility
towards one another
2. Pragmatism and education
2.1 Show how “experience” of pragmatism has been
challenged by pragmatists such as Rorty. (5)
The centrality of “experience” for Pragmatism has been challenged.

Brandom, have argued that Pragmatism could do well if it eliminated
experience altogether. Brandom says, “Rorty and I both think that…the notion
of experience is simply outmoded. I agree with him that there is no useful way
to rehabilitate the concept of experience.
