old. Recently Eric has begun to act more and more like his older
brother – including play fighting and the occasional swearing. His
schoolteacher has also noticed a change in Eric’s behaviour and is
beginning to be concerned about this increased aggression. When
asked by his teacher why he is acting this way, Eric says’ “my
brother fights and swears too so it must be OK.”.
Imagine you are Eric’s mother. Using your knowledge of social
learning theory, what could you do at home to help reduce Eric’s
aggressive behaviour? Is there any advice you could give to his
brother, Michael?

Eric’s behaviour has started to become more aggressive as he is imitating
his older brother Michael’s behaviour and actions, which are also
aggressive. Eric has been observing his older brother, who is his role model,
play fighting and swearing and being allowed by their parents to act this
way, so therefore has started to behave this way himself. This links to
Bandura theory in 1961 and his Bobo Dolls experiments. Bandura wanted to
test the idea that children learned to become aggressive through imitating
the person who is behaving aggressively. In his Bobo Dolls experiment he
took 96 nursery school children, who were aged between 3 and 5 years old,
