Question 1
This question carries 40% of the marks for the EMA and relates to the Research Methods Strand
Part 4. It assesses module learning outcomes KU5, CS3, KS1, KS4, KS5, KS6 and PS1.

Your answer to this question includes work that you should have already conducted
for Research Methods Strand Part 4, so you will need to refer to the information for this on the
SDK228 website, accessed from the SDK228 resources area. In brief, Part 4 of the Research
Methods Strand requires you to complete all of the following tasks, which provide the basis for
answering this EMA question:

 work through the library training resource on database searching

 use the skills you have learned from this training activity to conduct a database literature
search of your own on the topic below

 complete a database search record (accessed from the SDK228 resources area of the
SDK228 website) reporting on how you conducted your search in order to demonstrate
your skill level in literature searching.
 a.This Database search record needs to be completed and inserted for Question 1a of your
EMA.

You are required to locate two scientific articles reporting original empirical research directly
relevant to the following question:

'Is music therapy a useful intervention for people with alzheimer’s disease?'

Notes and requirements for selecting the two papers:

o You must include papers that have studied the usefulness of music therapy as an
intervention for Alzheimer’s disease.

o At least one of your selected papers should be comparing conditions of the
independent variable (either within or between participants). The independent variable
can be directly manipulated by the researcher (for example; choosing which people
receive a therapy or not), or observed as it naturally occurs (for example; selecting
people if have developed alzheimer’s disease or not). Your other paper can be the
same as this, or any other type of empirical research.

o Your selected papers must be no longer than 12 pages each in total (this includes
copyright information and references).

Notes on submitting your chosen papers:

o You will need to download and save two full text articles, in PDF format.

o You MUST include your two PDF files in your EMA submission; you will lose marks if
you do not include the PDF files. Providing an electronic link to the papers is not an
acceptable alternative. Do not copy the papers into your answer.

o Zip the two PDF papers and your EMA document into a single zipped file and submit
this via the eTMA system. You should refer to the instructions found at Combining and
compressing (zipping) your files and also this How to zip up your files document for
help with this.

(Word limit: 300 words)

(12 marks)

,  b.For this question part, you need to select two criteria from the Research Methods Table
for TMA01 and two from the Research Methods Table for TMA02. ‘Criteria’ are rows on the
tables. For example; ‘Presentation’ would be one criterion from the table for TMA01. You
will need to complete the boxes in the Proforma for EMA Question 1b, stating your
understanding of each criterion you have chosen in relation to each of the two research
papers you chose for Question 1a. Then use this understanding to provide a brief
evaluation in the final box of the proforma. The criteria you choose should be the ones that
best help you to conduct the final evaluation.

Note: Each of the two papers can be considered using the same or different criteria from
the Research Methods Table for TMA01 and the Research Methods Table for TMA02.

The aim of completing this proforma is for you to show what you have understood
from the papers you chose. Therefore, all your answers within the table must be
written in your own words. Do not copy and paste any information from your
selected articles into your completed proforma. To do so could lead to an academic
conduct investigation, the delay of your module results and a potential disciplinary
case.

Carefully follow these instructions to complete each section of the proforma. If necessary
expand the spaces to accommodate your responses:

o Identify the two papers you selected using the database search record, providing the
full references in the OU Harvard style in the appropriate space.

o Confirm that you have included the two selected papers as PDF files zipped with your
main EMA file. Your answers for Question 1b are likely to receive NO marks if you do
not include your two PDFs.

o Use the spaces provided in the proforma to state which two criteria you have
selected from the Research Methods Table for TMA01 and from the Research
Methods Table for TMA02.

o Complete the boxes, stating your understanding of each criterion in relation to each
paper, followed by a brief evaluation in the final box of the proforma. Expand the
spaces to accommodate your responses if necessary.

o Make sure that you insert the completed proforma into your EMA script.
Remember that the pdfs of your two research articles must also be zipped
together with your EMA script for submission.

(Total word limit: 1200 words but please see the proforma for details of how this is broken
down. Note that the wording of the criteria you have chosen IS included in the word limit, so
you must count these words too. You may wish to shorten the wording to help you stay
within the limit.)

(22 marks)

 c.Now select one of the following employability skills: Self-management, Team-working,
Problem-solving, Communication and Literacy, Application of Numeracy, Application of
Information Technology.

Briefly explain your level of this skill before starting SDK228, how the skill has developed
through studying the SDK228 Research Methods Strand specifically and indicate your skill
level now. Note that you can use any of Parts 1, 2, 3 or 4 of the Research Methods
Strand that you have studied throughout SDK228 to answer this question, but you must
identify one or more specific aspects of the Research Methods Strand that have helped you
in developing one of your employability skills.
