Nitraationen kunnen door planten opgenomen worden
Denitrificatie (in zuurstofarme bodem - anaeroob)
Bacteriën gebruiken nitraationen bij afbraak van organische stoffen omzetten in
gasvormige stikstof en zuurstof, die deels wordt opgenomen door planten
Stikstofbinding/stikstoffixatie (anaeroob)
Nitrogenase: N2 2 N , daarna ontstaat ammoniak
Cyanobacteriën kunnen met heterocysten ook in een zuurstofrijke omgeving binden
Fotochemische verbinding: (onweer) N2 + O3 NO3-
