aim(s)/objective(s) produce an investigative project proposal

Assignment title
Unit 6 – Literature review and Investigative project proposal

Assessor

Start date

Hand in deadline

You work in a research and development lab. Your supervisor
has decided it is time for you to manage your own project. You
will choose an investigative project based on advice from your
Vocational Scenario (or supervisor and your own interest within the field of chemistry,
Vocational Context) biology, or physics. You will present a project proposal to your
supervisor. Your presentation will be supported by notes in a
logbook.

Task 1: Task 1 You must decide upon an investigative project with your
supervisor (tutor), producing an appropriate project proposal.
You will undertake a literature search and review for your
investigation and your project will be based upon this. You will
record your literature review, analysis, and evaluation in a
logbook. You will also include your proposal in the logbook, with
the hypothesis and any potential limitations of your
investigations.

You will present your project plan proposal to your tutor. It
should include:

 the hypothesis you are to investigate
 a rationale for the area of study
 Results of a literature search and review into your chosen
area of study. You will analyse the results of this search
and discuss its relevance to your project proposal.
 Aims and objectives
 Potential limitations of the project
 The consideration of more than one method of
investigation and evaluate these methods justifying the
proposal you have chosen.

You will record your literature review, analysis, and evaluation in

, a logbook. You will also include your proposal in the logbook,
with the hypothesis and any potential limitations of your
investigations.

 Literature review report
Checklist of evidence  Project Proposal
required  Presentation of project plan proposal
 Logbook

Criteria covered by this task:

Criteria
To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:
reference

A.P1 Carry out a literature search and review into a chosen scientific area.

Produce an appropriate project proposal for an investigative project

, 1. Introduction:
1. Nature of topic

The nature off my topic is investigating if the setting can change the way maggots can move in
a maze.

2. Why you chose the literature

This literature I chose was maggots in a maze and I chose this literature because it appealed
to me, and I thought looking at insects was also an interesting topic to research about.

3. What the topic includes

This topic will include how varied factors can contribute to the behaviour and the change in
maggots' thoughts. These factors will include different environments for the maggots such as:
Light and dry
Light and damp
Dark and damp
Dark and damp

Other insects and animals

Are maggots used in medicine? (WebMD. 2021. Healing Wounds With Maggots. [online] Available at:
<https://www.webmd.com/diabetes/news/20040920/healing-wounds-with-maggots> [Accessed 7 December
2021].)

Maggot therapy is the use of green-bottle fly maggots that are injected into a wound to
remove necrotic, sloughy, and/or infected tissue. If a wound is thought to be prone to re-
sloughing, maggots can also be used to keep it clean after debridement. Maggots are effective
because they eat dead tissue (debridement) within the wound, which can help to spread
infection. Because the larvae are thought to secrete substances that fight infection, this
treatment appears to help reduce the risk of infection after surgery.

Is maggot therapy a painful procedure?
Pain at the application site is the most common side effect of maggot therapy. Patients may
experience a "nipping" or "picking" sensation that is uncomfortable. This discomfort may be
severe enough to necessitate the use of oral analgesics, or the patient may request that the
treatment be stopped early.

What are maggots' natural habitats? (Southglos.gov.uk. 2021. [online] Available at:
<https://www.southglos.gov.uk/Documents/Leaflets/COS070024.pdf> [Accessed 7 December 2021].)
The soft-bodied maggots are surrounded by a moist breeding site (damp soil, rotting
vegetation, and meat or animal faeces). When maggots reach adulthood, they stop eating and
leave the breeding site in search of a place to leave the nest. They emerge as adult flies after
pupation.

Where can maggots be found?
Water, the rat-tailed maggot, for example, lives in still pools of water. Meat that has gone bad.
Calliphorid maggots, also known as blow or bottle fly maggots, are most found in rotting meat
across the United States. Fruit and Vegetables. Creatures that are alive. ( Pets on Mom.com. 2021.
Habitats of Maggots. [online] Available at: <https://animals.mom.com/habitats-maggots-6765.html> [Accessed
7 December 2021].)

What attracts maggots the most?

, The presence of an animal carcass, improperly stored trash, or excess dog faeces are the
leading causes of maggots in or around your home. These materials attract female flies, who
lay their eggs on them.

What elicits a response from maggots?
Light and Odors can affect maggots. Researchers recently discovered that they have light-
sensing cells all over their bodies. Both assist in shielding them from excessive light, which can
be fatal to young fruit flies.

What do maggots eat to stay alive?
The larva of the common fly is known as a maggot. Maggots resemble worms because they
have soft bodies and no legs. Their heads are usually smaller and can retract into the body.
Maggots are larvae that feed on the rotting flesh or tissue debris of animals and plants.

What is the maximum lifespan of maggots?
Maggots live for about five to six days before becoming pupae and eventually adult flies.

Is there a brain in a maggot? (Los Angeles Times. 2021. Maggot mysteries. [online] Available at:
<https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2006-may-07-oe-cobb7-story.html> [Accessed 7 December
2021].)
A fly, on the other hand, has about 1,300 Odor-receptor neurons on each antenna, whereas a
maggot has only 21 Odor-receptor neurons on each of its two "noses." Despite its incredible
simplicity, the maggot's brain, yes, a maggot has a brain) processes smells in a similar manner
to humans.

Why do maggots gravitate toward darkness?
Maggots, grubs, and worms prefer to live in dark, damp environments. There are two main
reasons why maggots prefer to be in the dark. The first reason is that dampness is common in
dark places. Phototaxis could be used by an animal that prefers damp environments to get
there.

What is the maximum distance that maggots can travel? (HomeSteady | The ultimate guide for all
your household needs. 2021. Can Maggots Crawl on Walls? | Homesteady. [online] Available at:
<https://homesteady.com/13405891/can-maggots-crawl-on-walls> [Accessed 7 December 2021].)
Maggots can travel up to 50 feet away from their food source in search of a dry place to
pupate. Crawling across a floor, the ground, garbage cans, and even walls is a common sight.
If there is a garbage can nearby, they will be more likely to crawl on the wall.

Where do maggots originally come?
Maggots are the larvae of flies, most commonly the common housefly and the bluebottle. Food
and other garbage attract flies, which lay their eggs on the garbage and hatch into maggots
later.

Are maggots harmful to humans?
Maggots ingested inadvertently do not usually cause long-term harm. If a person ingests
maggots from spoiled food, they may develop food poisoning. Food poisoning symptoms can
range from mild to severe, and they can last for several days in some cases.

2. Background to the hypothesis

My aim: this investigation is being carried to see which environmental factors can affect the
way in which the maggots move in and around a maze. Such as a light/dark condition or a
dry/damp condition

My hypothesis: most maggots will turn towards the dark side in the maze and, they would
move more towards the damp side Aswell as these are mainly the living habitats of maggots.

Null hypothesis:
