, FACULTY ISSUES AND CHALLENGES IN DISTANCE LEARNING 2
INTRODUCTION
Transitioning from face-to-face to online requires time management, and learning styles. As
billings and Halstead stated that the faculty member’s role as an educator changes when he or
she take up the online teaching (Billings & Halstead, 2016). There is limited interaction with
student since there is no face to face, therefore, the primary role of the nurse educator is to
facilitate student’s learning experience (Billings & Halstead, 2016). Though, research indicates
that the quantity, quality, frequency, and the type of student-instructor interaction is directly
related to student’s perceptions of their online learning experience. Online faculty play a crucial
role in shaping online learning outcomes. Nursing is a clinical profession, instructors must teach
more than just knowledge, they must also guide students towards achieving objectives within the
affective and psychomotor domains. Furthermore, in a distance learning, nursing instructor plays
an important part in the professional socialization of students, often serving as professional role
model (Dhilla, 2017).Faculty’s issue includes, time management, evaluating learner’s
expectation through communication, assessing learner’s readiness, and identity learner’s
integrity in online courses.
DESCRIPTION OF FACULTY ISSUES AND CHALLENGES THAT IMPACTS
DISTANCE LEARNING
There are two major concerns on the part of faculty teaching online classes which is how to
manage and facilitate asynchronous online discussion and how to manage time effectively.
Faculty have indicated that their workload increases with online teaching and the amount of
communication that can be generated by students can be overwhelming (Billings & Halstead,
2016). Faculty faces issues on how to improve practice, combat isolation from some learners in
other to encourage full participation on various discussion and knowledge and resources. Nurse
