Describe the KEY POINT and how the knowledge of the chosen Key Point impacts

the care provided by the Nurse Practitioner.

PARKINSON’S DISEASE AND BRAIN MICROTRAUMA / CONCUSSION

Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is known to be a progressive, multi system

neurodegenerative disease affecting people as they grow older. It is the second most

common neurodegenerative disease globally with increasing incidence and prevalence

along with the changing population demographics (Pringsheim et al, 2014).

In Parkinson’s Disease, the dopamine levels are decreased, which results in

dopaminergic cell death, which is then manifested by motor deficiency and, possibly, a

reason of the cognitive deficit noted in some PD patients. PD is generally not recognized in

its early stage because of a long latency between the first damage to dopaminergic cells

and the onset of clinical symptoms. There are potential risk factors such as environmental

toxins, drugs, pesticides, brain microtrauma, focal cerebrovascular damage, and genomic

defects (Emamzadeh & Surguchov, 2018).

The Key Point that will be discussed is BRAIN MICROTRAUMA or CONCUSSION.
