I. What are the main ideas is Laub's article?

Laub presents the positioning of a listener in various contexts. According to Laub,
‘The listener to the narrative of extreme human pain, of massive psychic trauma, faces a
unique situation.’ (Laub 221) While there is historical evidence which may account for the
trauma, it is not the same as the experience that someone has witnessed. Thus, when a listener
is told about trauma they are part of a party to the creation of knowledge de novo. The
listener becomes a partial owner of the trauma, partially experiencing it for themselves, yet
also creating their own individual perception of it. A listener must learn to listen and hear
silence, recognizing how to respect the trauma of the other person and the experiences that
they went through in order to be a companion and help the person through the trauma. While
a woman was giving her recount of an uprising at Auschwitz, the historical concern arose
about the validity of her story. However, Laub interjects that it is not entirely the exact
historical accuracy that is important, but the experience that they had witnessed the
occurrence. Laub aimed as an interview, “…not to upset, not to trespass- the subtle balance
between what the woman knew and what she did not, or could not.” (Laub 224) It doesn’t
matter the entire historical aspect, but of what happened there to them personally.
