A. Understanding of Nursing Quality Indicators



“The governing body of the American Nurses Association (ANA) established the

National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI) in 1998 as part of the ANA’s

safety and quality initiative. This database program collects designated indicators that

strongly affect patient clinical outcomes for two major purposes. The first purpose is to

provide comparative data to 393 health care organizations to support QI activities and the

second is to develop national data to better understand the link between nurse staffing and

patient outcomes.” Coming up with these indicators will help bridge a gap between

multiple issues in healthcare and help provide more quality care for patients. In the

scenario with Mr. J, there are a couple of nursing quality indicators that could assist in

identifying issues that interfere with patient care. The first NDNQI indicator is Pressure

Ulcer Prevalence. It is obvious that Mr. J. has a hospital acquired pressure ulcer when he

is escorted out of bed to the bathroom when the daughter notices a red mark on the lower

spine of her father. If staff were aware of this indicator, they would know that a red mark

in comparison to a son burn should be blanched on the spot, immediately reported and

follow up care initiated. This is an indication of a stage I pressure ulcer. (Werner, 2017)

This leads me to the next NDNQI Indicator, the Restraint Prevalence. Restraint

Prevalence would assist nurses in understanding restraint policies and procedures in

relation to patient care. Nursing staff would understand Residents/patients placed on

restraints must be a danger to self or others. Mr. J was not deemed a danger. He just had

mild dementia and was able to respond appropriately. Restraint patients also must be
