Chapter 8 – class, gender, race, and equality Equality/inequality exists in many forms:
o Social class
o Gender
o Race
o Disability
o Ideas and beliefs
Equality and equity
Equality – the state of being equal, especially in status, rights or opportunities
Social equality:
o Rooted in western ideals of what is ‘right and wrong’
o American and French revolutions
o 20th century:
Healthcare
Education
Pensions
o Equality is the norm, and inequality is acceptable only if based on ‘common utility’
Social class and inequality
Social class- the relative location of a person or group withing a larger society, base on
wealth, power, prestige, or other valued resources
Does it still exist? – ‘the class war is over’ – Tony Blair, Labour PM (1999)
Performing arts to politics – social class is still a benefitting factor
Concept of ‘life chances’ – starting the race halfway down the track
Gender, inequality and discrimination
Gender bias – behaviour that shows favouritism towards one gender over the other
Gender identity- a person’s perception of the self as either female or male
Gender role- attitude, behaviour and activities for each sex and are learned through the
socialisation process
Patriarchy – a hierarchical system of social organisations in which cultural, political and
economic structures are controlled by men
Gender refers to the attitudes, feelings and behaviours of members of a society that are
typically associated with being male or female
“Male breadwinner model” – old and yet also new concept. Women were the ones that
maintained the home and took care of the children, the men were the ones that would work
and make money
Glass ceiling or broken ladder/ sticky floor? – women are encouraged to work their way up
the hierarchy, to get jobs that are not typically for women
Sexual harassment
Does success for women mean becoming more like a ‘man’?
