Quality of Healthcare

Nursing is a constantly evolving and in this healthcare environment it needs evolve too to

meet the changing patient and clinical needs. According to Havaei et al., 2019, the model of

nursing care is of the primary determinants of success in nursing practice. The model of nursing

care typically influences the quality of healthcare and affects the level of medical care

utilization. Currently, the organization employs total-patient care as the central nursing model.

This model is intensive and recognized among the oldest models of nursing care. Nurses work in

shifts to attend to the patient’s needs. However, this model is outdated and requires a

comprehensive review. A transformative model is needed to augment the quality of healthcare

further and reduce healthcare costs. The purpose of this paper is to examine the viability and

efficacy of the primary nursing model as an alternative to total-patient care to improve outcomes

and reduce costs at the organization, with a specific focus on patient safety goals.

New Nursing Care Delivery Model and Patient Safety Goals

The Joint Commission identifies several patient safety goals to be prioritized by

healthcare organizations. Two important goals for the organization regarding the introduction of

the new nursing care model include improving effective communication and enhancing the

safety of high-alert medications. Effective communication is a crucial element in the delivery of

quality care to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Effective communication reduces the risk of

misinterpretation, misinformation, and confusion that are likely to affect patient safety outcomes

adversely. On the other hand, the safety of high-alert medications is also a priority, given the

heightened risk of causing harm when misused. Thus, the proposed nursing care model should

address and meet these two goals, providing limitless opportunities for improving

communication effectiveness and enhancing the safety of medications (Havaei et al., 2019).
