1. OVERBEVOLKTE INSULAE (APPARTEMENTSBLOKKEN)
De meesten van de 1 miljoen Romeinen in de 1ste E vC. huurden een kamer in een
overbevolkte insula (appartementsblok (soms 4 verdiepingen hoog)):
• Het hele gezin woonde in de kamer
De benedenverdieping van de insula bestaat vaak uit winkeltjes en werkplaatsen en
meestal wonen de winkeliers en werklui met het hele gezin op een tussenverdieping
in hun zaak -> overbevolkt
• Geen verwarming
• Geen verlichting
• Geen watervoorziening: de meeste woningen hebben geen waterleiding
o Water ? Aan de fonteinen
o Te wassen/baden ? In de thermen
o Toilet ? Latrinae (openbare toiletten)
• Geen culina (keuken) -> Buitenshuis eten in de tabernae (eethuisjes waar je voor
weinig geld een snelle hap kan eten)
• Slecht onderhouden: gevaar voor brand of instorting (insulae worden slechts gestut
op dunne palen)
• In de zomer is het er snikheet zeker in de kamertjes onder het dak (= de goedkopere
kamertjes)
