Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care

Unit 10.2 - Caring for children and young people

P3 - Explain the factors that would lead to suspicion of child maltreatment or abuse

There are many different types of abuse such as sexual abuse , physical abuse ,
verbal abuse , mental abuse. Sexual abuse refers to any action that forces someone
to do something sexually they don’t want to do and that can be being touched in a
way you might not like or being forced to have intercourse. Maltreatment can be
neglected , this is when someone has failed to provide necessary care or attention
towards a child , elderly vulnerable person , disbaled person etc..

Another factor of neglect is if the child is living with their parents and the child isn’t
being fed the child is starving which can lead them to feeling ill and dying of
starvation. It can be suspected that child isn’t being fed at home because the child
will feel lightheaded at school and won’t be able to concentrate in class due to the
lack of food they’re receiving also the child skin tone will look pale due to
malnourishment. A suspicion of child maltreatment is when the child has scars ,
bruise marks around the body which is a sign of the child being physically abused.
When a child is being physically abused they will feel like no one cares about them
and being abused is something normal and that can make them feel isolated from
their classmates and that can lead to the child feeling depressed and suicidal.

Mental abuse can come from the child being around parents who are alcoholics ,
drug users , sexual abusers that can affect the child’s mental health because they
would believe all of the abuse is normal and that can cause the child to have mental
illness. The theory of mental abuse could come from the child living with the parents
who neglect him which can affect his upbringing because he can turn out violent ,
angry , not loved which can hurt the people around him and also himself by getting
criminal record affecting his life. The children will feel a lack of attachment from
their parents because their parents aren’t doing things they used to do when they
were younger but now they are acting abusive towards them that can affect the child
as well as the parents because the parents are showing a negative behaviour
towards the child which will affect the child’s upbring and mental health because
they will view abuse as normal as they grow up also that can

P4 - Explain appropriate responses when maltreatment or abuse is suspected

An appropriate response to a child being mistreated is to reassure and support the
child so they know they can trust you with any information they tell you which will
allow the child to open up and tell you more details that is happening to them. For

, Camilla Rashid

example if the child comes to school with bruises and is not speaking to none of
their friends that can be a reason for the teacher to ask them if anything happened
and if there is anything they can do to help. The impact it will have on the child is
that the child will feel like they can trust that specific teacher since they are showing
they are supportive and actually cares about them. The child will feel reluctant at first
but if the teacher shows nice facial expression such as smiling and going down to
their level also speaking to them privately so their classmates do not hear which can
make them feel embarrassed. Children are very vulnerable so they will need to be
ensured that the teacher is there to support them and they will protect them from
being in any risk of danger.

Another response can to the maltreated child is to deal with own feelings and
emotions so they child doesn’t feel more overwhelmed than they are. This means
that if a child tells you that they are being mistreated at home then it is important for
the individual to not show their emotions for example if a child in school feels brave
enough to tell the teacher what they are going through at home then it’s the teacher’s
responsibility to keep them safe and away from danger. If teacher starts crying in
front of the child it can trigger the child to feel even more scared than they are
because they don’t really understand what is happening to them and if it’s normal or
not so if they teachers show their emotions that can trigger the child to sense
something is wrong.

Listening carefully and attentively as an adult is very important because if a child or
young adult is trying to tell you something is wrong then the teacher must be
attentive and alert when they child is trying to explain to them if they are going
through something that is harmful towards them. If children experience early and
their thoughts , feelings and opinions have value they are more likely to continue to
share these well into their teenage years. For example children model out behaviours
and are following out lead before they take their first same respect and appreciation
in return. Children and young adults will feel like they are doing the right them
because the teacher or someone older than them who they respect are doing it such
as their favorite singer , actor, etc.. so if the child believes that you are listening to
them carefully and they will have that bond with you that will make them feel
comfortable enough to tell you the abuse they are going through.

P5 - Explain the strategies and methods that can be used to support children, young
people and their families where abuse is suspected or confirmed.
