Business Plan

The following paper will provide information related to a project that will address how

staff engagement and staff retention in the Emergency Department (ED) is directly affected by

teamwork. By spending time in the ED I believe I have uncovered an area that could use some

improvements. These improvements will optimistically improve the work environment, staff

relationships and staff-patient relationships. This paper will include the business plan proposal,

the purpose of the project, financial plan for project, the stakeholders who are involved and

strategies to have the plan approved.

The PICOT question is: In the Emergency Department what is the effect of staff

participating in team building activities in comparison to staff not participating in team building

activities on staff engagement and work environment culture over six weeks?

A business plan will help us execute this project seamlessly and guide us during the

planning phase. One could say that a business plan is like planning for a road trip and the plan is

the itinerary for the trip (Peek, 2019). The business plan should help guide you throughout the

project and be used as a resource. The business plan should include the projects purpose,

evidence for the project, expected outcomes with a timeline, marketing analysis and plans, how it

blends with the organization’s mission, how it is relevant in the current situation, budget needs,

who is involved, cost analysis and break-even analysis.

By addressing staff engagement and staff retention issues with this project we can

hopefully improve our staff to staff relationships as well as our staff to patient relationships.

Teamwork impacts everyone, not just the staff. It can negatively impact the patients if the

working relationship is not in good shape. By improving the working environment and

implementing team building activities we can hopefully create a positive impact for our patients

and our staff. By presenting a practical business plan to leadership and the decision makers in the

hospital the project will get the support and the approval it needs going forward.

Proposal

Teamwork significantly affects a unit and team-building activities can be used to as a

solution for poor staff engagement and poor patient outcomes (Wilkes, Marcin, Ritter & Pruitt,

2016). Working relationships also have a significant impact on the care our patients receive. By

implementing team-building activities for staff to participate in we are offering an outlet for

them to build their trust with one another and to build their rapport with one another. Over a

period of six weeks a small team of ED staff who volunteer will be put together to engage with

staff and provide opportunities for team-building activities. Before the six weeks an interview

with each staff member will be conducted to evaluate their feelings towards their working

relationships and the teamwork within the unit. After the six weeks is completed staff will be re-

interviewed about their feelings toward their working relationships and the teamwork within the

unit. At the end of six weeks the outcomes we hope to encounter include an increase in

teamwork within the unit, improved staff relationships, improved staff-patient relationships,

inviting work environment and retention of staff.
